Is there a way to put a handling fee on a per item basis in each auction, instead of in global settings? Why not have that option when you are entering your auction information so that different items can have different handling fees?

Please log it on my behalf also. It is not a trivial thing. For example, the handling fee on 50 pieces of china (which have to be carefully and individually wrapped) cannot be the same as the handling fee on a boxed item (which must be wrapped in bubble and put in another box).
One of the fees above should be around $20, the other $1. Calculated shipping is, to be blunt, USELESS without individual handling fees. Sorry to be blunt, but this feature will only work for people selling many instances of similar items, but not for those of us who auction a wide variety of items. I was looking forward to this capability, but I am underwhelmed.
I just reviewed the test environment to confirm that this capability is indeed in the upcoming release currently in testing.
When using calculated shipping, the global preference will be the default value for each item; however, you will be able to overwrite it per item with your own value (if you have a fragile or large item, etc.). Obviously, if you use fixed price shipping, you'd include the handling amount in the fixed price shipping cost. We hope this makes calculated shipping more useful for you and your buyers.

I take it then that a new SMP will be released concurrent with this? I don't see a place in the existing SMP to put the handling fee in.
SMPro functionality will not be available immediately with this release. In the interim, if these fragile items are more an exception than rule, you can launch to pending and edit the shipping markup online. I do not yet have a schedule on the new SMPro release for these enhancements.
