Most buyers use paypal and everything works fine. However, twice in the past week I've noticed that if the buyer uses vendio checkout and selects check as the payment method, My eBay shows the item as paid. When I roll over the dollar sign in my ebay, it indicates that I had marked the item paid. The first time I thought it was a fluke but it happened again tonight.

Hello Oldcountrybarn,

That error is a glitch on eBay's side, related to using Checkout Redirect and not using PayPal as the payment method. The only workaround at this time is to opt out of Checkout Redirect. We apologize for the inconvenience.
