But there are situations like this that leave me shaking my head. I sold a widget that has a number of parts to it. I sell alot of them. One buyer writes that she was away when it was delivered and it sat around her office for awile and then she opened it. Only 1/8 of the order was there. The part that was deliver, (she claimed) was a part that is doubled in the set, if you follow me, so would I please send the rest of the set. (my antenas went up....hmmm wanting a duplicate set so she would get 2 for the price of one). I wrote immediatly and told her what it cost for me to ship this widget and I send alot of them, so the package was intact when it left my post office, and sent her a copy of the DC and the postage slip. She said the package WAS completly sealed when she got it so no one from the office could have tampered with it, and also changed her story and said she was mistaken and now 3/4 of the set was intact. (could she have changed her story because I told her when I got back into town I was going to start a postal investigation and find out who had tampered with her package and instigate postal fraud charges?) She also said it is not necesary for me to start any investigation because she would just buy another set, "not that I am loaded with money or anything, but it is no big deal." (her words). Well it seems to me it was a big enough deal for her to try to get another set of widgets, but when I said I would pursue the matter with the postal authorities, she wanted to just pretend it never happened. (sigh) Can't people just play fair?

Most people are honest, but there are some who aren't and because of that we need to be leery of everyone.

It's like the saying about wine and sewage: If you add a cup of wine to a barrel of sewage, you get a barrel of sewage. If you add a cup of sewage to a barrel of wine, you get... a barrel of sewage.

Most people are trustworthy -- too bad we can't tell in advance who the dishonest ones are.

"I Want To BELIEVE!"

However, I can't.

After 4 years in the millitary and constantly being lied to, I began my adult career as a retail store manager.

I caught little old ladies stuffing thier sweaters with loose goodies, little kids, teens, many adults, and even one guy who was so loaded with money that he practically stole it in plain sight! (he wanted to buy HALF A PACKAGE of batteries! I told him I couldn't do that, so he went around the corner, tore the package open, stole the amount that he wanted, and left the balance in plain view as a message to me.)

Sorry, I've caught so many shoplifters. We weren't selling food, shelter, or clothing - nothing life saving, just stuff. And after my first Christmas, where I had worked so hard to help peope find the right gift, then to see 60% or more return that gift for cash, believe me that I just have little faith in good, human nature.

Life goes on.

I bought a clock as a wedding present at JC Penney. I saw the display model and picked up a new box from the shelf. I paid to have them wrap it. When the bride opened the package and started to take it out of the box, she gave me a funny look. The box was empty. I had obviously picked up the display box. Now, did Penny's accuse me of being a thief? NO THEY DID NOT. They gave me the clock with a smile and a we're sorry. Mistakes happen. I don't care if you ship 2,000 a day of an item, its possible this one had missing parts. Everyone is not out to get something for nothing.

Most people are mostly honest. I'd say this is not one of those honest incidents.

Borillar's experience mirrors my own. I worked in several retail places over the years. You would not believe the stuff people would try and pull. Not all of them were out and out thieves, but many would essentially try and get something for nothing and if they couldn't do that, they would go for getting it for a whole lot less.
I even had an employer claim that property given to me by a customer as a gift belonged to the store. Yeah right!

This one reeks.

Most people are honest, but the ones that aren't have required us to produce theses crazy TOSs, long winded ones at that. People dont realize what some people will try. You now have to mark your items ,for people will try and return items not bought fro you, I KNOW, just had that happen. It never ceases to amze me what some people will try!
Theres always someone who wants something for nothing, and you never know which it one may be. Better be prepared, you never know whats going happen next! Generally it always the one you would have never expect.
I have only had two bad experiences out of close to 250 sells, but those have taught me a valuable lession, YOU NEVER KNOW, BE PREPARED, TRUST NO ONE!

what a sad little thread!

here's my two cents worth...

I,too, have worked in retail and I believe it is one of the most eye-opening jobs you can have...by that I mean, you can really get insight into the way people REALLY think by what they do in a store...

my last retail job was at one of those discount,40%-70% off, kind of stores...but that didn't stop most people...I guess they figured if they could get that kind of discount, why not a 5 fingered one?

every month the store had a contest to see which employee was the best at catching these shoplifters/ticket switchers...needless to say, with the exception of the first month I was there,I managed to be the "best" each and every month 'til the day I left the job...

is it any wonder I'm a CYNIC??

sorry about the long post...

Since I've seen nothing in the news of my ex passing away (hopefully slow and agonizing) I'll say that most people are honest.
