I sent a package priority and insured with delivery confirmation. The patient buyer and myself gave it two weeks then I went to the PO where I mailed it. The clerk gave me a package tracing form at first. Then I mentioned the package was insured and she told me I had to wait 30 days then fill out an insurance claim form.
The claim form had no place to indicate the package had a confirmation number and ought to at least be searched for at the origin and destination. It just assumed the package was missing so they could pay off.
The item was not easily replaced--buyer wanted the item, not their money back.
Was the clerk right that they look for uninsured packages and just assume insured ones are gone forever?
(this question started out actual but the package arrived after 3 weeks so it's for the next time)

It's my understanding that you have to wait 30 days to either initiate a trace for a lost package or to file an insurance claim for a lost package, but they will check current information they have for the delivery confirmation. The buyer should also check at their post office to see if it's there. HOpe this helps.

If the package is "insured", you just have to wait 21 days to trace it. If it's "not insured," 30 days. Delivery confirmation can tell you if the package was delivered to the zip code. Doesn't tell you if the person received it or not. To me, it's a waste of money.
The clerk was wrong. They don't look for uninsured packages, they look for insured ones. Uninsured? Good luck on getting any response after 30 days are up.
