It's me again. Muriel, the meek and humble, with yet another question for my buds on AW. I thought I read somewhere one time that you cannot re-use USPS Priority Mail boxes. Is that true? Please advise. Thank you (again)!

In my humble opinion I believe you can use it as long as you use it as "Priority Shipment." Why not? The post office it seems, would save money since part of the price of priority shipment is the materials.

Re-using them for Priority Mail is not a problem. Re-using them for non-PM is where you enter a gray area.

Muriel, I read that here too... but I think the point was that you can't re-use the priority boxes for ANYTHING OTHER THAN Priority shipping.
I recycle those boxes, re-using them every chance I get, for USPS shipping. I've never had a problem, never had a complaint from anyone, and I've used about seven different Post Offices around here and neighboring cities (depends on what I'm doing that day on top of shipping).
I don't think anyone would complain if you recycle them within the Priority system. Just don't use them as Christmas boxes, or turn them inside out and ship using other methods.
If the P.O. has any problems with recycling, it's news to me. Now I'm curious too, to see if there IS some rule against it....
edited to correct my blasted spelling.

The thing they dont want you to do is to turn them inside out and reuse them to ship any way other then priority.
reuseing them is good for the PO they get paid twice, three time or more for the same box when you reuse them.
its also good environmental sense as well just do it responceably and reuse for priority only shiping .

When shipping the occasional heavy item at UPS I see people coming in with Priority mail boxes that look rather fresh, including using the Priority mail sealing tape, and UPS never complains. They just take the money and throw...umm...I mean PLACE it on the conveyer belt. :^)
I should say that I have seen a few there that seemed to be recycled. With the price of boxes it's kinda hard to blame folks for that.

Just keep in mind, folks, that if you decide to recycle a box, make sure it's still got its structural integrity. A corrugated box that has a small dent or crease in it will collapse if something heavy is put on it - and we can't count on OUR box being the top one in the pile

Hi Everyone!
I just received a shipment from the good old USPS, ordered from the website. Included was a card with a statement to the effect that I would not use the priority materials for anything other than priority mail. I am required to sign this card and mail it back. If I don't, they will not deliver any more priority materials to me. Looks like they are getting tough!
Happy Labor Day!

Yes you can reuse priority boxes it's called recycling. They don't want you to use new boxes for non-priority stuff that's all. I had a postal clerk challenge me one day because I had what she believed was the size of a priority box and it was I had reversed it and I embarrassed her to NO END and torn the damn thing in front of her and showed her where it had been used before and demanded she now get me a good box and rebox my stuff which she did. To this day I have never seen her dare challenge anyone else in that post office when I am there. So her stupidness did cost the PO a new box to put my stuff in and she had to reverse it. LOL

Last time I was at my PO I saw the clerk re-wrapping a box they had opened to check to see if it was PM turned inside out. It was not, and I could plainly see this. No apology to the sender - the clerk was very methodical, took her time. The customer had no choice but to be delayed.
This has also happened to me personally about a year ago. My husband used to custom make boxes from a template for items we shipped a lot of and I must of sent well over 100 of these boxes. When this crackdown began they opened one of mine. I was both mortified and flabbergasted. I guess they thought I was turning them inside out all along. I could not believe it. I was completely offended. This is what prompted me to start printing my own postage. If they open a box of mine, I will not have to know about it.

I think that this has been standard practice for a while. When we first ordered online, I belive, 6 or 7 months ago we received the same thing.
