Has anyone seen a reference anywhere that describes a history of zip codes or a listing of historical zip codes and the dates they were in effect? I've done a search and have come up empty-handed.

I'm trying to date an item which is labeled, "Long Island City 1, N. Y." -- assuming the "1" is the old zip code. The item looks like it's from about the 40's or 50's, but I'm not sure about that zip.

Zone numbers were instituted in 1943. 5 digit zips in 1963. The "1" on your item is a zone number.

In light of that info I don't know if this would help you, but someone might want it. This is the zip code FAQ (goes to show, there's a FAQ for everything).
