I have a buyer who wants to pay with a money order from the Canada Post Office made out in US funds. I've read some earlier threads here that say I should be able to cash this (no fee) at any US Post Office ... can anyone point to a ruling (ideally on the USPS website that I can print out) that says this?
Thanks

jsmith99 I have read that too, but still accept only international money orders in USA FUNDS only. Don't want to take any chances unless I know for sure.
Personally I would contact the post office to make sure. And it would have to be a clerk who knew what he/she is doing!!!

JSmith99, I'd ask the customer to buy a bank money order in U.S. funds, much easier to cash IMHO

Jsmith99- If they are referring to the pink Canada Postal money order in US funds, I get those quite often and have no problem cashing them at the post office. I will see if I can find reference to it for you from their website.
PS - None of my 3 banks will accept an international money order drawn on an out of the US bank, regardless whether they state US funds or not. The nearest bank in my area that will accept non-US bank money orders is 40 miles away - so I try to insist on the pink ones from Canadian bidders.

The closest proof I could find is this.
http://www.framed.usps.com/cpim/ftp/bulletin/2000/pb22031.pdf
The August 24, 2000 postal bulletin. It lists the latest missing and stolen money order forms - not to cash. There is a section for canadian and US MO. If the serial number is not listed in the list, then USPS can cash the MO.

I have cashed Int. Postal MOs from Japan and Canada with no Problem at my local post office, I haven't gotten them from any other country yet. Why not ask the clerk next time you are there?

I live in Canada & we have only 2 types of PO MO's. Canadian, in Canadian funds, and International, in International funds.
Any PO in the U.S. will cash the Canadian Pink International MO's [in U.S. funds] free of charge.
Some U.S banks charge a fee, 'cause they're money grabbing weenies.

Thanks to everyone, especially AnonymousCoward who put me on track to the postal explorer site. Did a little checking there and found the following document by searching the International Mail Manual: http://pe.usps.gov/cpim/ftp/manuals/imm/immc3.pdf
Note that page 26 begins with "391.5 Procedures for Cashing Money Orders Issued by Foreign Countries". Section 391.52 reads "Canadian Money Orders Canadian money orders may be paid only if they are addressed to a payee within the United States and the amount is imprinted in United States currency."
I find that when I'm doing anything out of the ordinary at my Post Office I do a lot better if I've got an official printout. Thanks again to everybody for the help.

Um, I don't think so, you can buy Canadian MOs in Canadian bucks, you can also buy them in US funds or UK funds ... don't know how it works with other countries, probably the same way it works for some "furrin" countries buying MOs for Canada ... they buy the MO at their post office in their country, and the money is paid to me by a check mailed by either the head PO in Ottawa or by some bank.

I just got into a mess like that. I was asked if I would make an exception and ship to Canada. I said yes with payment by an International mo. Got the MO and went to bank to cash it only to find out I could cash it, but only for the rate it would be in Canadian Currency. Example I could get elevm bucks or so from a 16.00+ MO. So I told the lady INTERNATIONAL MO ONLY PLEASE...am waiting

Yes, I know, those are considered an "International MO"
The first thing the PO clerk asks is "Domestic or International".
jtw74 ........ Was it a Postal MO? If so, take it to your PO, "some" U.S. banks charge fees to cash/deposit International Postal MO's.

Perfect timing!
I just returned from cashing a Canadian Postal MO.
Post Master did look it up somewhere and cashed it with no problem.
It beat having the bank charge $5 to do the same thing.
Thanks to cdnbooks and reddeer for their help in this matter about a month ago.

If your bank charges for international money order or US denominated check I don't understand why you would not tell them to take a flying leap. I have twice in maybe 20 years found something unacceptable and told them to forego the charge or close my accounts out - their choice. I have yet to have them choose to boot me. When they do there is no shortage of banks to chose from.

Oh, but there is a shortage in many small towns. I have 3 banks to choose from.
Overall the one I am currently using is the cheapest one. To find another that might cash this Canadian MO with no charge would be adding fees to services I use more often.
It is only the international money orders with no US bank on the face of them my bank has a problem with.
So to tell them to take a flying leap would cost me more in the long run.

You're welcome and thank you for the document you found. I actually didn't know of these documents before you started the thread. I found the first one while searching for an answer. I especially like your find, it's direct and to the point.
I will keep both documents bookmarked. The postal bulletin fraud alert lists the serial numbers of missing, stolen, lost and counteirfeited money orders forms from both USPS and Canada Post. From now on, I will check every serial number before I ship an item. I often shipped before I even cashed the payments in both checks and MO.

I asked my Canadian buyer to purchase a pink International. Today I received it. Tell me, is the domestic also pink, because I don't see the word International or US dollars anyhere on it. I think my buyer is going to be very unhappy if I have to tell him I can't cash it.
Did I mislead him, or are they both pink, one just says International?

Sorry I can't help you with the color. What you are looking for is the currency. If it is what you want, somewhere it says US$ or US Funds.

I am confused. Is there such a thing as an "International" Canadian Postal Money Order?
The ones I have received are pinkish, with "Canada Postal Money Order" on them, made out in US dollars.

Any time I buy a Canadian Postal Money Order, whether it's for Canadian or US funds, it's pink. The only difference is that for US ones, on the right-hand side of the cheque, where the value of the MO is written in digits, it says "USD" right beside the value.
