What the heck is this? Very small beads strung together and hand sewn to the backing. It is about 18" tall and 12" across the bottom edge. Someone suggested that it is a loincloth, someone else that it is akin to a mola.

Anyone know?
Thank you.

Beats the hell out of me. But whatever it is it the workmanship looks good. Any idea of the age or if the beads are ceramic or plastic?

They look like glass beads to me, but it's definitely not a mola. A mola is acheived by layering different fabrics and cutting away designs in the fabric layers to reveal the colors underneath.

This reminds me of something that has a South American flavor to it though, although I don't have any more info to give than that. It certainly is nice!

Hmmm......18" x 12"

If it IS a loin cloth, I'd like to meet the owner.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. (The devil made me do it.)

Glass or plastic, how to tell??
Oh. I know. Bang them on my teeth.
Be right back.
Me thinks glass.

I don't know the age.

I would say possibly a wall hanging or a runner. Loin cloth??

Just did a search and an average loin cloth seems to be 8 X 10.

re: the loincloth idea, if I hold it at my waist, it actually seems plausible. Some ceremonial type application, but hey. I don't know so that's why I am asking. I also wonder if it is telling a story - the end being these two kissing peacocks - (no pun)

Hi, I am fairly sure its NOT a loincloth...for one, it does not have the plain center part that goes between the legs (even beaded loincloths have this. Its too long to be a dance apron and the design is not an older design. My guess would be a hanging or runner. The beads look "netted" rather than loomed (I am going from memory here, I don't have your pic in front of me).....disregard that last statement...I rechecked the pic...its not loomed but looks netted and then sewn on a backing. Its definitely unlike any breechclout or loincloth that I have ever seen or made so I am guessing its a decorative hanging or runner. Hope this helps.....

Thanks quillworker.
Anyone have any ideas how to get it seen? Who might be interested, as far as an area of interest?

my guess is this its a wall hanging tapestry of some type and was more then likely bought buy someone from a craft store or mail order as a kit and they made it from the patern that came with the kit.

the kit prolly ran them $40 to $70 and it more then likely keep them busy sewing beads on nearly 3 to 6 months. mid 60s or 70s looked great at the foot of the bed on the bed or on the floor or wall if you can see traces of staining in the fiber or theads it may have even been used as a runner or on the back of a large sofa for a short time then tucked away safely for years

this would be my guess just looks like the type of craft kit my wife would buy about mid winter when shes really bored and starts but some times may not finish.

Weather you were the one who spent the money for the kit and spent the time it takes to make this patern or if your not no matter.

this would prolly sell at a craft fair from $150 to $350 maybe more being hand made just for the effort that went into it if nothing more.

some hand made crafts I find for some reason seem to be hard to sell at online auction but the item that do sell they do very well and glass beads are hot right now or at least they were up to the last month or so

Perhaps try listing it under Collectibles:Cultural:Latin America. To me this looks like it may have been done in Panama or Guatemala or one of those countries. I do not see anything similar that is listed on ebay at this time. There was definitely a lot of time put into stitching this and I hope you find someone that appreciates the workmanship.

Edited to add that you could also try listing it in the textiles category.
