Ok, I'm going crazy with this one.

I do not know what to call this thing. At first I thought is was a chamber pot. (But it has no lid, and has no rim or anything else to suggest that it ever did. Besides that it seems too large to be.

Please, if anyone can help me I'd greatly appreaciate it!

It measures 9" deep, and 9" wide at the top. The handle is wire, with a black wood grip.

I got it at a reputable auction house (they called it a potty) It is in awesome shape except for two small rust spots where the handle has rested on two sides. There is some crazing, but no discoloration.

Thanks!

Yep, a potty it is.

It may or may not have had a lid originally, as many of these were sold with the lid as an optional purchase.

Thanks Shoshanah! I have no CLUE how to do that.

(Also, I will have better pictures taken, but I was so fed up with this one I took a quick picture to show you all tonight.)

Hi Amellia==potty sounds just about right--perhaps the lid has gone by the wayside over the years. But then again, Looks very very interesting and I'd make mention of the pressed pattern about the rim. Do you think it might be related to the dairy business?-swear I see a cow or some sort of animal impressed along the edge. What a find!!
Do the Martha Stewart thing and plop some dried flowers in it when you list

It really is!? An actual potty meaning they sat on it?

THANKS!

Chamber pot is the correct term. As to the actual mechanics of how it was used, I'm trying not to envision that.

BTW, list it as WHITE ironstone in your description. It should do very well.

Yeah, I think I will Jeanau. That was exactly what I was thinking when I saw it blazing in the sun at that auction. It's really pretty.

And it does look like cows in the photo, but they are actually a kind of scroll, or scallop. (sp?)

I'm just so happy to finally know what it is for sure!

LOL fountain! Tell me about it! Just think how I felt when I was going head to head with another woman during the bidding. It was $45 (don't tell my husband) but I just had to have it!

Needless to say, I didn't go to the lunch stand with it in my hands!

Hi Amellia--and still thinking--there is a pouring spout there on the side--all the potties I have had ---never had that spout--leaning towards farming and some sort of utility there--whew--bet you are glad not to have an item that people shat into

Hi Amelia,
I think this was called a slop bucket or slop jar. Mostly used to -ahem- deposit nightly waste in (especially on those nights when it was twenty degrees outside). Most of the ones I've seen had a lid, for obvious reasons.

Jeanyu, the thing that you are thinking is a pouring spout is actually the "ears" where the iron handle ends go into. There is one on each side. They area applied onto the piece.

And fountain, I've looked at (what seems like) every chamber pot on Ebay, but have seen none like this. What do you make of the iron handle rather than an applied ironstone one?

The bail handle was for ease of transporting it. The chamber pot that you're referring to (and for which there are several listed on ebay at any given moment) looks kind of like a huge teacup, with a handle on the side. The fact that there is a dearth of this style listed (or in completed auctions) is indicative of the fact that this type is less commonly seen.

Which fact will work to your benefit when you list it.

Hi Yourquest! Thanks I think you've hit the nail on the head!

I have finally found one similar under "Slop bucket" on ebay.

Hooray!

I would also think it had a lid (for obvious reasons LOL!) But I really can't see one going on the top of this one. (Although anything is possible.) The rim is smooth and nice without even a scratch. The way curves out is different too. I dunno, but I'm just sooo happy to have all this information!

Thank you Everyone! I have a belly-ache from laughing so hard!

This is also known as a slop pail. If it was made without a lid it may have only been intended to dump dirty water into.

Thanks Shanni!

Does any of you WONDERFUL people know how I could tell for sure if there ever was a lid, or if it's just never to be known?

If there was a lid there should be a ledge around the top for it to sit on. If it flares out smoothly from the inside I would not think there was a lid. These were used with wash sets and the dirty water from the basin was poured into the bucket so it could be dumped. Much nicer thought than the other suggested purpose!

Yeah Shaani! Thanks so much, now it is definatley sounding more appealing to me.

Does anyone know of a website that has some ironstone info? I'd love to learn about all the pieces they had.

Thanks!
