A search for "no paypal" and [we are no] "longer accepting paypal" brings up about 10,000 items.

But, that doesn't begin to count the people who revised auctions yesterday or added to the description.

You can also add all the new auctions where sellers simply removed any info about PayPal. I know I did and will continue to do so. I've left my current auctions alone but once those are over my account will be closed.

I am also seeing auctions that are charging small fees for PayPal use. Some might argue this is not legal but I disagree with that notion. The reason I think it is alright is how does a person know the bidder even used a credit card. He may fund his paypal account in some other way. Even if the bidder used a credit card you are not technically accepting a credit card the bidder just funded his Paypal account with it to pay a seller. Just a thought.

Well snip, lets have an auction number and ask Safeharbor about it?
Would be interesting to find out. I know I won't even bid on an auction that has "extra" charges. Even though I don't use paypal.

Hey! Why not start charging the bidder who FEEDS YOU, for your GAS cost, the BabySitter, the FOOD and COFFEE you consume while listing...Your MORTGAGE, since you operate a business from home...

Strictly a personal opinion: I feel it is wrong to keep passing on extra costs to the bidder....and I Sell too..

As to ANTI PAYPAL in listings, again, a personal opinion: I don't feel I have the right to interfere with someone's business. If I don't like that business, I just dont use it, or I stop using it..

I just completed doing a mini search (on auctions ready to close today) using the words "no longer accepting PayPal". Search brought up 1100+ auctions. BUT when I clicked on and viewed each auction (on the first page = 25) there were NONE whos description said "no longer accepting PayPal". Their auctions still say they accept PP.

What I did notice were some "no longer accepting checks" and ONE seller who is NOW charging the PayPal fee to her buyers. (And PP won't be billing her until 10-1-00 ?)

So....

Not exactly...lots of those are "no longer" ...whatever or a longstanding no paypal. Hardly a tidal wave. It'll be interesting to see what happens next week.

furkidmom:

9270 items found for (no PayPal)
12 items found for (no longer accepting PayPal)
146 items found for (no longer accept PayPal)
132 items found for (no longer take PayPal)
558 items found for (don't accept PayPal)
200 items found for (don't take paypal)
12 items found for (PayPal sucks)

snip: I'm 99% sure it is against eBay's policies to add a surcharge for accepting a specific payment service, even if it's not specifically for a credit card.

mballai: That's why I said it doesn't take into consideration the people who have revised their description recently (see the Announcement Board) or added a comment (search has never captured those).

Wow! And I thought 2 out of 14 items I looked at was a lot.
I wasn't even searching for antipaypal stuff I was looking for a watch
I'm probably going to stick with paypal until they force me to say my "hobby" is a business. Then I'll move on to some other company that doesn't have the nerves to tell me I run a business when the IRS insists it's a Hobby.

WTG Glenda!! I just went and revised 37 of my auctions that of course had no bids and are running until the 18th and took out the logo and unchecked the master/visa box. I REFUSE to advertise for a *BUSINESS* that makes me feel like a leper since I refuse to be verified, (personal choice) and who also deals with deceptive practices. Again, it is notthe fact they are now charging sellers, but the deception factor.

edited to add: Just did a search and one came up with *too many to list* and the other came up with 172907 items with no pay pal. YOWZA! I wonder who is cleaning boots this morning at PP?

While I had the notion it might be alright to charge a fee. I sure am not going to try it out. Now that I think about it. Fees could be considered fee avoidance. Got my first $0.39 cent charge from Paypal last night. sigh
I will keep my Paypal account but it will not be advertised on my auction pages. Bidders will have to ask.

Well, I'm certainly confused here. I was surprised when Glenda said doing her search, that 12 items were found for the search "PayPal sucks"....so... I wanted to see them.

Again, our numbers were different. I did (and was) searching in descriptions and title. The number of auctions my search found (under PayPal sucks) were 254. I did a random seach on the soon to close auctions and all sellers accepted PP....the ones I clicked on had the word 'sucks' in their auction description but it was NOT tied in with PP, which they all accepted.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, or maybe since I'm only viewing soon-to-be-closed items...there is a difference. Not sure, but so far haven't found any (but didn't do a large search either) who actually put PayPal sucks in their auction description.

The search mode just seems to be pulling up auctions where the two words are used in the same auction, but not together.

Glenda, I did a search on PayPal sucks, and (seriously here) got results that included vacuum cleaners and they took PayPal.

If 10,000 aren't taking PP, that's .25% of the total 4 million items for sale right now.

Even if 100,000 aren't taking it, that's only 2.5% of the total.

The numbers don't mean anything until they are adjusted for the number of people who never took PP in the first place. Show me some figures on how many people have actually changed their TOS, then it might be more of an impact.

tegen - Me, too. What you said.

I've been thinking about it, and I am wondering, what if we just do nothing? At some point will PP just go into every account and look for incoming money (which must equal a seller, right?) and close those accounts if they are Personal?

Or will they just convert them to Business and take their fees unilaterally?

If you put the phrase "paypal sucks" inside quotes and search title and description, auctions with that exact phrase will turn up.

I got 12 of them too.

Linda_K and ShellyHerr - searching for the specific string "paypal sucks" (not just the combination of those two words anywhere in a listing) will produce the 12 listings Glenda mentioned.

I found the 12 PayPal sucks auctions. 10 are the same guy, who it looks like he never took PayPal, the other two, had it in their description, before yesterdays fiasco, one the those two says: I ALSO ACCEPT PIDPAY, PAYPAL SUCKS!

Ok seriously I do see a lot of people taking PP off thier auctions. And they have every right too disagree with PP, and do so.

If everyone that used to take PayPal now goes to checks or money orders, I'll get a money order.

Well, I've added this to my auctions, using the logo created by somebody else posting on AW - I downsized the logo to comply with ebay regs just in case some dweeb at SH thinks it's advertising Paypal (don't laugh, you know how those guys are). Anyway, with credit to the logo creator, here's what I'm adding to my auctions - it links to the "Paypal Says All Sellers" thread on this board. Feel free to use it if you like:

<img src=http://www.geocities.com/leighandval/Nopay.jpg> We do <b>NOT</b> accept Paypal anymore. <br>Click <a href=http://www.auctionwatch.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=254626>here</a> to find out why!

HCQ When you put that logo in your auctions, a perspective bidder clicks on the link, they see this first:

Logging into my PayPal account tonight, I get a long message from them basically saying that I MUST UPGRADE if I sell anything at any time on any site.

The only people who can have Personal Accounts are those who use it strictly for personal use, i.e. buying stuff on eBay.

So, the time has finally come... PayPal is no longer free for eBay sellers.

And so if they are not a regular customer of yours, I guess the thing is, why would they care? They see, PayPal is no longer free for ebay sellers, but if they are a buyer, most wouldn't care.

But they might notice the part where it says:
Accounts are free for those who use it strictly for personal use, i.e. buying stuff on eBay which they would think, ok its free for me.

But you can put any logo or TOS in your auctions that you want, I, personally will still will buy, if I want it, with money orders, or if anyone is still offering PayPal.
