I purchased a really cool victorian children's portrait at auction today. It is definitely from the mid 1870's - 90's. It looks like a real photograph that has been redone to look like a chalk drawing or charcoal drawing. It's a print not an original artist rendering. Is there a technical term for this sort of Victorian Portrait?

I've seen this technique many times, but have always wondered how it was done and what was the significance.

Inquiring minds want to know!!

Marvey: Is your picture perhaps a hand-tinted photo? Sometimes artists added color by hand to black and white photographic images. Could you post an picture of this piece?

It may well be done in pastels, which experienced a big resurgence among artists during that period.
