Can anyone point to a site where I could perhaps get some help to get Netscape to run?
Here is the problem: I use to run Netscape exclusively, until about 6-8 months ago when out of the blue (for no apparent reason that I can remember - ie no new software had been installed etc) it just wouldn't launch anymore - always came up with 'illegal op.' I tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times back then, and eventually gave up.
Well, I tried it all again lately - downloading the latest version, installing it, and I still can't get it to launch - always that 'illegal op' thing (and I even installed it on a different drive this time too). The error message is:
I have emailed Netscape twice so far, and never a response beyond the auto 'we got your email' msg. I reaaally would like to have Netscape running - this is the auction related part - so that I can check my auction with both Netscape and IE to make sure they are viewable by both types of users.
I'd appreciate any help that you techies out there could give me!

First of all I would try shutting down your computer and turning the power off to it. Often times it could be as simple as that, the technical support number to netscape is: 1-800-411-0707, I don't know if they are open now but they would be able to help you.

Asided from the fact that Netscape can be buggy and sensitive, have you done a recent virus scan? Have you run a scan disk? Is Netscape the only program that does this?
I use Netscape exclusively and have just learned to put up with occasional quirks.
Good Luck.
P.S.- Don't look for a fast answer from Netscape. It took them over a week to get back to me on something similar.

Good suggestions so far But, yes, I get weekly dat file updates for my virus scan, and run a full scan weekly. Scan disk runs at boot up. I defrag periodically.
As for turning off my 'puter ... well, lol, then nothing would run ;p I think you are suggesting I reboot and try. Rebooting is not a fix for this - I've tried that.
It has been a couple of weeks already since I last wrote Netscape (with their site promise of "an answer within 24 hours" .. yeah sure ;p). I will give the 800 number a try tomorrow, but it might not work as I am not in the States.

Try unloading some programs that are running in the background. Look at your StartUp folder and your TaskBar icons.
I would also guess that maybe your Registry has a few missing Netscape keys or some Netscape keys are repeated or corrupted. Reinstalling won't help. Go buy Norton System Works and run the WinDoctor to fix it.

Netscape's customer service (or lack of it) is ATROCIOUS....always has been. I have run them for almost 5 years and have NEVER been able to get them to answer me about ANYTHING.
I am impressed that you got an answer at all.

I've had similar problems with Netscape -- and I finally gave up and started using IE. Netscape would open, but would "reliably" freeze and I'd just hear continual whirring from my hard drive. I'd have to force quit out of it every time.
I just took Borillar's suggestion and bid on a copy of Norton System Works. I'm sure my PC could use some help since it's flippy with some other programs, too.

When netscape starts acting buggy like that, what you have to do is basically uninstall it from your computer and then delete all entries of it from your registry (please make sure you've backed up any bookmarks/email/etc first). Once you've done that, you can then reinstall Netscape and there should not be any further problems.
To delete it from the registry:
Go to "start" "run" and then type in:
regedit
Under "HKEY_CURRENT_USERS" open "software" and then find "netscape". Highlight netscape and hit "edit" and then "delete" (or you can just hit the delete key on your keyboard)
Under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" open "software" and then find "netscape". Hightlight Netscape and hit "edit" and then "delete".
If you have doubts about performing this, please back up your registry first.
Once you have removed all traces from the registry, reboot your computer, and reinstall Netscape and import your email/bookmarks/etc and you're set to go.

Thanks rosiebud, I'll try that! It was kind of frustrating when I reinstalled it and it did the same darned thing the older version had been doing.
