For those of you who know how to get rid of the kak virus, can you please post the info here, or a link to the old info? I can't believe I got it again. I had just reformatted my entire hard drive to be rid of it once and for all. It didn't take long to get it again...
The "autoexec.bat" can be restored by copying the "C:\AE.KAK" to "C:\autoexec.bat"
The lines that you will see in the kak autoexec.bat are:
@echo off>C:\Windows\STARTM~1\Programs\StartUp\kak.hta
del C:\Windows\STARTM~1\Programs\StartUp\kak.hta .
In your Registry remove following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run\cAg0u = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\.hta
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\signatures\Default Signature = 00000000
Kak uses a known security hole in Microsoft Outlook Express to create the local HTA
file.
If active scripting is disabled from Outlook Express, then the worm will not work.

On sept 9,2000, 8:42am there was another thread about KAK and how to turn off the "active X" controls. It was called FFFFFFF KAKed again (or something similar)

If you are still vunerable to this worm, you need to download the patches from Microsoft. Go to Windows Update from the Tools menu of Internet Explorer. Make sure you run the Security Updates.

In reading about the KAK virus - I'm lost. What is this virus? How does it behave? Does it only affect Outlook Express. I want to protect our computer from this. Thanks to AW for this helpful message board.

Thought I would share this find...
In reading about various Anti Virus programs, I read about this one on ZDnet. It appears to totally surpass any of the more popular so far, such as McAffe and Symantec. Plus, they have a FREE phone tech support in Santa Cruz, Ca...plus no virus definitions updates necessary, as the modules are built-in right into the computer to detect and block any malignant residents....I am about to switch.

Thank you for your swift response.
To Shoshanah: Your information was very helpful. I'll be looking into the Achilles Heel solution at InDefense. Sounds like a REAL solution!
I've been very fortunate in escaping viruses, but they scare me, and I'm all in favor of using defensive measures in order not to need remedial solutions.
I have McAfee Shield at the present time, but from what I understand about anti-virus software, it's more or less "after the fact".
Again. thanks for sharing your information.

About once a week I received email infected with KAK. Apparently it is very hard to get rid of. I always refer the sender here to the AW posts, and they are usually very grateful.

It might not warn you that you have it, but it will show up when you do a FULL scan. Do a thorough scan of your "C" drive and all of the folders and files.
