Why should my counters be visible or not? Do high counts attract more "aggressive" bidding?

I think you should make them visible. Let's people know when a lot of people have seen this and it will inspire more bidding. At least that is what I think

I seriously doubt a high count will lead to more bids. I do think that a high count for an item that has NO bids might be bad because bidders might wonder why a large number of people looked at the item but not even one of them bid. That may keep them from bidding too.

As a buyer, I like to see visible counters. That way I know how much competition I'm likely to have. But then again as gboy said I might wonder why no one else bid, unless it's a high priced item.

I think counters are purely a seller tool, to guage -- well, to guage whatever inoformation you think they tell you.

As far as I can see, the only thing a potential customer can glean from large counter hits is the realization that many people seem to be looking but not as many bidding, perhaps leading them to think that there is something wrong with the item which they are somehow overlooking. From low counter hits they might be led to think that something is wrong if so few people appear to be interested.

In other words, go invisible. (My 2¢ )

you know. I think I was just swayed. From now on my counters will go invisible.

* * * When I see an auction with a high count and no bids I wonder, "WHAT was that seller THINKING -?!" It says that 200 people, say, looked at the item and not ONE of them thought it worthy of a bid!

I now agree with that. We should keep it invis. and just see things for ourselves.

I often check out the counter numbers on auctions similar to mine. If they have higher numbers than I do, I try to figure out why and adapt my listings accordingly. By providing me with this information, my competitors are making me more efficient.

I prefer to keep my counters private. But I encourage others to use visible counters.
