I came by this awhile back, and have NO CLUE as to the age, or even what its made of. Its heavy, and it is a candle holder, but it looks very old. Feels like lead because its heavy. I want to list it tonight, but dont know what category to put it in. Anyone have any idea what era it could be from? (No markings on it at all, and the color is what you see)

To ID the metal under the plating, scratch it on the base with a steel nail, and also see if it attracts a magnet.

Bright silvery or dull grey scratch + not magnetic = "pot metal" or spelter, a cheap relative of pewter.

Grey scratch + magnetic = plated iron

Penny-colored + not magnetic = Copper or brass (brass is usually yellower than pure copper)

Brownish-colored + not magnetic = bronze

White and crumbly + not magnetic = Painted plaster

You are a wealth of information! Im so happy youre here in EO! I did as you said, and scratched it lightly with a steal nail...no magnet sticks to it, and it looks like bronze, because its brownish colored. So, if I list it with the title of "Bronze(?) Frog", would that work? and if it was your frog, what would you start the bidding at, and what category? Sorry to pick your brain, but I LOVE your brain

Mauimoods -
Emphasize the frog ... there are collectors of the non-slimy kind.

I start things at a price that will give me a small profit and let it go.

eastwest, it isnt copper and brass. I got alot of stuff from Indonesia when I had my shop mauimoods in a physical location. And, I can still get them wholesale if Ive a mind to. No way is it from Indonesia. I would know immediately (friends of mine go there all the time, and bring back containers....and I showed it to them and they had never seen one before either). The person I got it from to begin with also didnt know from whence it came and she had it for some time in the family (ex's family).

Dont want mel gibson...want sean connery

Its ok. I am really wanting to know for sure if this frog is not bronze, since I listed it with a (?) after that word. My friends who just got back from Indonesia said they never saw something like this one. Wonder if I should go update the auction? I said I wasnt sure what it was...but sheesh, I dont want to make something out to be what it may not be either.
