When I usually stumble across an auction with music, I quickly back out, especially when I'm at work.
Well, I opened one up this afternoon, heard the music start up, then hit the backspace key right away. Unfortunately, the music kept going. Even after I closed the window completely, it was still going on. I had to e-mail the seller to ask how to get "A Hard Day's Night" to stop!
Anyone know how I can get rid of this?? TIA

Okay, nevermind. After about 15 minutes of that nasty muzak, it finally stopped.
Why do sellers insist on doing this? I wouldn't buy something from this guy if he was the only vendor left on eBay!

Boy, do I agree with you. The music is horrible. As soon as it starts I hit the back key, but sometimes it keeps on coming. They can't really think this pulls in bids! Some of the wallpaper they use is pretty offensive too. I went in to look at a piece and the wallpaper was so bright I could not clearly see the piece. Backed out and said forget it.

I looked at an auction that had a wav file that said 'Hello, gorgeous!' when it first came up. My husband was furious! He thought some sort of computer hanky panky was going on...
Please sellers, get rid of the music and the wav files. They ARE REALLY ANNOYING!

Ya'll might also consider dropping a quick note to the Selles that their special effects did exactly opposite of what they hoped. Otherwise, they'll never *get it.* They'll just think the buyers weren't interested. Don't expect the Selles to appreciate hearing from you (tho some might, actually), but still it's a good thing to do.

I had one today that crashed my browser. I thought I must have had too many browser windows open for the amount of memory I have, so I tried again, using only one window. It crashed again. The next time I managed to bookmark it before it crashed my browser. So I tried again -- tried hitting the [esc] button before it'd get a chance to crash, but that didn't work. I did figure out that it was some sort of floating gif thingy. I found out the seller's ID and emailed them to let them know of the problem. WHEN will sellers learn that "less is more" when it comes to auction doodads?! (I bet their item sells for less than half what it'd usually bring.)

Tacky, tacky...Hello gorgeous??????....
As to telling sellers, they will find out soon enough. I feel I should not be policing their listings.
All I have to do is hit the back button. Some people actually love that stuff...so, freedom for all... .
The only time I feel I should get involved is if I see an obvious "reproduction" listed as "old, OLD, OLD!!!!"

I have to agree, and I'm another one who backs right out when wavs and midi's start up, along with backgrounds that take forever to load and little bouncy things all over my screen.
Even more irking - one line descriptions and three or four lines of scriptures! Puhleeze.
Just give me a detailed, honest description of the ITEM, a great picture or two, state your shipping and payment terms clearly and forget all the other hype.

I have to disagree....the more music, the more tacky gifs the better! WHY?
Because most people don't stick around and bid so I get my items cheaper!

I intensely dislike the music, too many 'thingies' in the picture and the ones that when you click on the page, I have to click on another page to see the picture. Or even have to click on more to see more pictures. BUT, I noticed they had a lot of feedback and people were buying their stuff so I assumed it was just one of my quirks.

and the item generally stinks anyway, thats why all the smoke and mirrors.
something like a fake lincoln print with johnny comes marching home blasting and a creepy tiger walking across the screen for no reason maybe even a slow waving flag that takes 20 min. to load. p.u.

I did e-mail the Seller twice. Once to ask how to turn it off and the 2nd time to tell them it did finally quit.
She said she had deleted my 2nd message because she didn't recognize the address. Sheesh...what if I was a Buyer asking a question about the item?? She apologized that I was having difficulties and said I would probably have to restart to get rid of it sooner. Oh, just what I like to do while I'm shopping...Restart!!!
Oh well, I'd go in again to check on their history & FB, but there's NO WAY I'm going to go through that again!

Amen to all!
Does anyone know? --if you turn off "play music" in your internet browser, does that mean you wouldn't hear your new mail alert thingie?
PS - if a song takes over, try Control+Alt+Delete (once!) and see if you can find the sound program and select "End Task."

Chiming in here....
I don't get the music because I keep my speakers in a cupboard and use my regular radio or disc player all day. I didn't even realize that auctions had music with them until these threads! I guess when I see the
animation on some it probably comes with music. I would plug in just to see, but after
learning more in this thread, I think not.
I did notice the beginning of an auction the other day that had a 3 inch logo of their U.S. state with it. Left a big white bare space to the left of the image.
I back out of many auctions that have wallpaper all over their upper page--can't read the price & ending times without having to sort through the stars, snowflakes, dots, etc. Of course if I really wanted it I would try!

toomanycomics...under normal circumstances, clicking on Stop or Back will usually stop it. However, even after closing the window entirely, it continued for 15 minutes. I had never even heard of this before and, of course, this was going on in my office!

I really feel like my space has been invaded when that music starts and that someone else has control over what I am doing. I don't think it adds a darned thing to the auction, people are either going to want the item or they don't. Anything that makes the auction slower to load like that turns me off. While I am ranting, I may step on a few toes here BUT I also get tired of looking at pictures of other people's dogs and cats in their auctions. Granted some of them are cute but that is not why I am looking at the auction. If they HAVE to do that, why can't they ask you to see their About Me page to see pictures of their pets?

I *enjoy* music, especially if it's a well-done piece that I happen to like anyway.
On my auctions, I use it rather sparingly; but I do hear from buyers who say they like it as well. I've never heard a complaint, except here.
If I don't want the noise to annoy me, I'll turn my sound down (or speakers off entirely!) before I go shopping.

my computer crashes when I come across those sound files so I hit the back button as fast as I can when I realize that music's loading. I have noticed too that the best bargains I've come across on Ebay were also accompanied by wallpaper that took TOOOO lOOOOOOONNG to load- which must mean that lots of other buyers are hitting the back button for that too.

Yes, please skip the music. People expect visual changes, but don't expect music. It may startle them, may overwhelm other music they are already playing, may be a song they don't like, may not like the rather spare sound of MIDI, and won't want to tweak their volume controls back and forth all the time.
I don't know how many times I've jumped, startled, or how many more times I've been otherwise annoyed.
I'll shout this: MANY PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE THE SAME MUSIC YOU DO, OR MAY NOT WANT TO HEAR IT THEN!!!!
Music is the worst thing to add. I know some people think it adds a homey atmosphere to their auction, but this is the Internet, not the local craft store.
If you still want to have music, provide a panel that they have to click play on. Many people will, many won't -- but the choice will be theirs.
Tons of non-essential images, especially blinking ones, is also annoying, sometimes very much so, but nothing makes me leave an auction faster than music.
----
What's being done in the name of direct marketing nowadays is crazy.
The above are all just my opinions, except where I cite facts as such.
Oh, I am not dc9a320 anywhere except AW. Any others are not me.
Is eBay is changing from a world bazaar into a bizarre world?
