Hello, I need help right away. I just won 2 auctions today with this NEW SELLER on EBAY. First she charge me $5 for postage. Then when I try to pay her thru Paypal, she won't give me her name. Sound very suspicious. How can I check someone's credential on Ebay? Should I pay or....? Please help, I don't want to get rip-off $60. Thanks in advance for any help.

By the way, she has no feedback, good or bad.

Well, I guess you should pay. That's what you agreed to, right?

The time to check feedback and auction terms was while the auction was still running, and before bidding. Was PayPal a payment option? Was the shipping cost stated in the auction? If not, you could have queried the seller before bidding to get clarification.

You don't need a last name to send a PayPal payment. If the seller shows at PayPal as a verified user, you should have a buyers guarantee through PayPal (check their site for details). Perhaps you'd prefer to pay using another method that would make you more comfortable- that's OK as long at it's an option in the auction terms.

If you're otherwise not sure about the seller, you can email them with your concerns- or you're allowed to pull their contact info, and that has a phone number you can call to increase your confidence level. I'd only recommending calling if you cannot resolve your concerns in other ways.

You should pay her with a US postal money order (photocopy it first).

I would send it certified mail.

If she doesn't send item, you can press charges for mail fraud against her.

If the item was over $100 you could have filed for ebay fraud insurance. Ebay doesn't do anything about rip offs less that are less than that.

I don't know if this will help you are not, but it is not necessary to have a person's name to use PP. I have never been given a name, just the email address. Being a new seller, she may not yet be verified with PP either, so you might want to find an alternate method of payment if you do not feel comfortable paying her through PP without her name. Afterall, if she accepts other methods of payment such as MO or check, she'll have to give you her name AND address in order for you to pay her.

I don't think $5.00 is too high on postage especially for two items valued at $60. If you are insuring the items, that alone will cost $1.80. That leaves $4.20 for postage. If they are being shipped priority that will cover the postage. Of course, that is just my opinion.

Since she has no feedback yet, you can't get a "feel" for how the transaction will go BUT I have bought from several "new" sellers and have never had a problem. In fact, they usually did a really terrific job because they WERE new and wanted good FB. Remember we all started with a FB of 0!

You could request contact info from eBay and give the seller a call I suppose.

You could also email her that since she is "new", you would feel better knowing WHO she is and WHERE she is before sending payment by PP.

The key to any good transaction is communications!

Good Luck! sulyn

cassiescloset: If the item was over $100 you could have filed for ebay fraud insurance. Ebay doesn't do anything about rip offs less that are less than that.

From the Insurance Eligibility page at eBay:

The value of your item is over $25 ($200 is the maximum amount of insurance per auction less a $25 deductible).

You can request user info at:

http://cgi3.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MemberSearchShow#ContactInfo

They will get an email giving them your info, you get an email with their info. If they are paranoid, this will throw them into a tizzy.

I wouldn't send anyone money without their full name and address. This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with fraud, but if for some reason her contact info is not correct and God Forbid, she should become ill or be in an accident and you didn't receive your item, how would you contact her? Yes, probably she would have someone answering her email, but if I send someone money, I want another method available to contact them should the need arise.

I also would not pay anyone whose only method of payment is through paypal. Too many opportunities for fraud, especially if the contact info is wrong. In addition, if for some reason you wanted to do a chargeback through your own cc company, I can assure you they would want a full name.

Yesterday I made a payment through Paypal. I only had the seller's first name and his email address. I paid through send money, rather than through the auction. When I went back to check the status of the payment, there was a link to get the background of the seller and it had his full name but not his mailing address.
