I've had it trying to sell clothing. I have had pretty good luck selling jewelry, so I would like to expand into that area.

I'm interested in buying gold jewelry with and without precious and semiprecious gemstones.

Don't give source, just advice.

Cassie, I don't want to try to discourage you from selling jewelry but for what it is worth....

I do pottery and textiles mostly and some glass. Recently I sort of inherited a lot of jewelry. Mostly English hallmarked gold rings with precious and semi precious stones. Some pretty nice stuff actually. I don't know too much about jewelry and this field requires some prettty specialized knowledge so I went to a lot of trouble to get this stuff authenticated, stones measured, etc.

What I have found is that jewelry on eBay is more competitive than anything else I have ever listed. I think it is a lot more competative than pottery and glass. There seems to be a lot of sellers who have very low mark ups and low profit margins. It looks like they depend on volume for profit. I have been able to sell this stuff at fairly lower starting bids because I really have no investment in it. I have found it to be a very tough category. Just a few thoughts.....

Not to discourage you either, but to enter into the jewelry category selling new stuff you will need to buy from wholesalers in very large quantities to get a competive price.

You would do better to find manufacturers to buy from and eliminate the middle man.

I've been selling inexpensive 14kt gold jewelry now for 12 weeks, have over $3500.00
invested, and have earned less than $1200.00
in net profits.

The last two weeks have been disastrous. I'll be lucky to pay off last months eBay bill.

cassiescloset -- In RL I am in the jewelry business. Although my current business is appraising, I have done the buy-sell thing for many years. In the early days of Ebay jewelry had a good market, now the sales are going to specialty or unusual jewery areas. Platinum, period and antique jewelry remains strong, so do name brand watches such as Rolex, Breitling and Tag Huer. Still, competition is strong. Remeber also that a LOT of the sellers of jewelry on Ebay are in the retail, wholesale or pawn business and have tons of inventory at hand. Some are selling very close to cost just to turn inventory and create cash flow. For me ebay selling is in the cool 'junque' department, I wouldn't touch jewelry with a 12ft pole...

Sorry to say also that there are plenty of people selling items that do not describe them correctly. 14kt turns out to NOT be 14kt it is overlay or plate. Some even buy cheap items and add stamp marks or tags. Many people have no idea if they see it so cheap that there is no way it is real. Some I am sure buy and wear it NEVER figuring out it is faux. Same with stones - they sell lab created for real.

Go to http://www.lapidaryjournal.com and check out their links for suppliers.

I also recommend attending several local gem & jewelry shows. I've hooked up with some great suppliers there. You will need a sellers' resale number in order to get wholesale pricing.

Jewelry is a very tough sell on eBay and you may want to look for really unusual items.

Good Luck!
