I need help on circa dating old tennis shoes. Is there a number wrote on the shoes or anything that I should look for? I'm always seeing nice old tennis shoes at yard sales and flea market but dont know whether they would sell on ebay. Any info would be appreciated. Also is there a book on this subject? Thanks, Shirley

Katybeth-the best place to find info on old tennis shoes is at www.farleys.com. They buy old jeans and tennis shoes, but they have to be a certain grade and they will give you that information. I have the book at work, not at home, so if you have specific questions, just email me and I'll be happy to look it up for you. I know that Nike is the one they look for the most, also some Converse. The way they tell the difference on Nike is the way the letters in Nike were printed on the shoe. The earlier ones were more of a blocked letter, not slanted. Also, the color of the swoosh. Converse is a little different. Anyway, that's all I can remember off the top of my head.

Hi Shirley--but what about the stench? Naw--just kidding Do a search and completed search on eBay and here on AW's universal search to get an idea of what is desirable or not in used sneakers. Heard that some are really hot to trot for old Nikes. Good Luck!

Here's a trick for dating Nike's....they'll have a serial number either under the tongue or on the inner liner. The first two numbers of the serial number are usually the year that model came out. Then you can call NikeTown closest to you, if you don't have a local store, call the Portland OR store, and ask if the shoes are still being made, what the current price is, etc....they can tell you a lot by the serial number. Just pretend you're a customer (wink!).
