PayPal will have a directory for those with Business Accounts, for listing your web site and/or auction links: Just in this morning from PayPal:

Dear PayPal User,

According to X.com© there are over 250,000 businesses and 4 million users that currently accept PayPal© as a secure online payment method. Since your business falls into this category, we would like to extend the opportunity to be included in a new and exciting marketing opportunity

PayPalShops.Com will act as a directory for "verified" businesses that accept PayPal© as a payment method. We are currently accepting applications for a FREE listing with our website. We will be launching PayPalShops.Com live on Monday October 16th, and will be providing FREE listings to our first 1,000 businesses/users until December 1, 2000. We hope to attract a large number of businesses; as such a forum will be a great place for X.com's© 4 million consumers to see exactly where they can use their PayPal account for online purchases.

With the Holiday Season approaching quickly, PayPal Shops.Com will be the first directory dedicated to providing X.com's© 4 millions users with lists of merchants that accept PayPal©. If you would like to be included in the initial directory of these featured companies listed with PayPalShops.Com, please go to
http://www.paypalshops.com/signup

or feel free to email us at [email protected]

with any additional questions that you may have regarding this exciting and free marketing opportunity.

***************

I have already signed up - Thanks PayPal!

"...and will be providing FREE listings to our first 1,000 businesses/users until December 1, 2000.

So if it's FREE to the first 1000 businesses who sign up, what does it cost the OTHER 249,000 businesses?

Just another scheme to take our money.

Do I correctly deduce that of 4,250,000 registered Paypal users only 250,000 have upgraded?

Yes, and the smart ones went on to other services that are more stable and business like.

Actually the smart ones realised the need and value of being able to take credit cards.
Making as many options available to their customers.

Plus that it was and is a whole lot cheaper than having your own merchant account and therefore saving the seller some money in the long run.

And upgraded accordingly and realised we are in the real world not the world of fantasy in that there are expenses associated with any business.Never expecting that things would be free forever as any business has to make money to stay in business. So why should Paypal be any different.

Actually, if you sign up for the auto sweep feature, PayPal is more expensive than my merchant account.

And the shops listing is free only until December 1st. How much does it cost after that?

Are you positive that paypalshops is owned by paypal? It says on their bizad.html page:

PayPal Shops.Com is not affiliated with X.com™ and is not endorsed by X.com™

And the domain is registered to someone with a hotmail email address. I don't believe that if PayPal opened it, it would be registered as such, and I also don't believe they would have that little disclaimer on that signup page if they were associated with PayPal/X.com.

Imabrit - We've been trying to get people to use thier CC's directly with us (we have a merchant account). In 4 months only one person used thier CC. The rest have been about 70/30 checks/PP. People don't seem to mind using thier CC for Billpoint or direct websites but I guess they don't like giving it to auctioners.

Vargas - Isn't sweep automatic if you have a verified business account? If not, is there a switch to disable it?

artsnflies ~ you need to turn the sweep feature on, it's not automatic. When you first log into your account, on the 'overview' page, there's the 'name' 'email' 'autosweep' 'status' areas. Autosweep is set to 'off'. If you click the 'off' link, then you're taking to '_profile-auto-sweep' page... where you have to check the box and confirm that you want the autosweep. I assume that turning it off is the same way as turning it on.

Adrian, I'd cheer if the paypal controversy was just a matter of a few percentage points in fees.

The issue is quite a bit more serious than that, involving issues of trust, incompetence and mismanagement.

Even a quick look at the auction boards illustrates the depth of problems -- and that they have nothing at all to do with fees.

This one smells of at least a trademark infringement law suit.

From their TOS:

4. PayPal Shops.Com is not affiliated with X.com™ and is not endorsed by X.com™.

I'm not sure how much information I would put on a web site that linked directly to my PayPal account. Well, yes I am. NONE!

Adrian -u-brit-u I agree the people who believed they would get free service forever are the same ones that believe the politicians when they tell you all they are going to do for you. I use PP because that what gets the money in. I don't trust them due to freezing accounts etc. However I limit my risk and accept it. You seem so reasonable I am surprised you are allowed to post here.

"Are you positive that paypalshops is owned by paypal?"

It looks like some quick thinking entrepreneur thought up this PayPalShops.com site. Anyone that signs up for that may be disappointed at the amount of exposure it will bring them.

I don't know if you could call it an actual scam, but it isn't what the original poster thought it was.

Rosiebud - Thanks.

Re: CC's - And to prove me wrong, just as I posted that message a high bidder asked if we accept CC's directly. Make that 2 payees by CC out of 4 months.

Re: PayPalShops - There must be some association. If not ownership then a licensing of the name or something like that. Otherwise PP wouldn't let them use the name much less promote them on PP's site.

I don't see it, but where on PP's site does it promote paypalshops?

jwpc ~ was this sent as an email or was it taken directly from PP's site? If so, where.

Thanks.

Well, this may be just a ruse to gather a mailing list and someone is using paypalshops.com until PayPal makes them shut it down.

mentecky - I'm not sure how much information I would put on a web site that linked directly to my PayPal account. Well, yes I am. NONE!

Well.....I did it - blabbed everything! Darn, I shouldn't be allowed near a keyboard early in the morning. *After* I gave them all my info, I looked for their advertising on the PayPal site and couldn't find anything about it. So I wrote to [email protected] and asked to be removed from their shop list.

Within minutes, I received a very nice and polite note from Kathy at paypalshops telling me that I had been removed from their list and she invited me to look in on them later to see their shops. Maybe they are on the up and up. I've decided to wait and see what happens.

Yeah, sure. Another post with a lack of information or references.
Don't believe everything you read on the web, or in your email.

auntpink - It's not your fault, or the lack of sufficient amounts of coffee. It was a deceiving email. My first tip off was the use of the (c) symbol instead of the TM. Second, there is no signature line to tell you what department would have sent it. Third, english grammer rarely slips by true marketing organizations, which X.com does have, although it does get by me often . (ie "4 Millions of users"

I did a bit of checking and in fact the site is registered to an individual with a Hotmail email address. I hardly think PayPal uses Hotmail for anything.

I also found it strange that NOTHING worked on the site other than the registration form.

They may very well be legitimate and this is just a poor excuse for an implementation plan. I just thought asking 1000's of users to sign up for a website that didn't have one working link was a bit odd.

rosebud

This came to me directly this morning from PayPal, (I presuem) I checked the properties of the e-mail and it says paypalshops.com (i.e.) [email protected]

I'll check with Paypal, no loss, as the only information they requested is link to my web site and web site description, which is info I'd give anyone.
It is tied to the October 16th date...

My guess is that Mr. Stock is going to make a ton on selling the resultant mailing list. Would be very surprised if PayPal doesn't get some kind of cease-and-desist order very soon.

Artsnflies - We have a merchant account also, but it has always been a hassle either for me or the buyer or both when it comes to charging an item. They either have to call it in (costs money for phone call and the timing has to be right - west coast/east coast) or e-mail it (security concerns) or FAX it (security concerns). A non-swipe transaction, of course, costs me as a merchant because there's an extra charge. And of course, there's a security concern with giving a cc number to someone on an auction site, period. IMHO, PayPal-type services have made the whole process extreeeeemly convenient, and less expensive too. I may be falling out of love with PayPal, but definitely not out of love with the basic idea.
