Here's The Post from the Board at Ebay...of course yup we gotta pay. But a neat feature!

Ebay says:

Does your silk shirt go into the Clothing Petite Size category, or in the Evening wear category? Should your grandmother’s necklace go into Antiques or Jewelry? Debate no more, as Listing in 2 Categories is here!

As a seller, when you list an item for sale, you will have an option to list your item in an additional category for double the listing fee. You’ll be able to merchandise your item in 2 categories, so when a buyer is browsing/searching within either of those 2 categories, they’ll see your item. As a buyer, you’ll have less of a chance of “missing” something!

If ebay didn't have a million different categories then we wouldn't have the dilemma of "which category does it belong in?"!!

Double the listing fee -- I suppose that's not so unreasonable. Of course I'll picture Meg & Pierre high-fiving every time do it....

So if I list my widget under Tools and under Widgets (and include both "tool" and "widget" in the description and title), when bidders do a search on "widget" does my listing show up once or twice?

Right now you can't even list in one category, let alone two. I will not be using the dual categories. I don't believe many people search by category anyway.

Instead of having to pay an extra fee, why not change your item's category after a few days to a new category. That's how I've been doing it so that my item gets maximum exposure w/o having to pay any extra fees. This has always been a freebie on ebay unless it's changed. Also, whenever I do a search, I don't search a category, I search a particular item or brand name, so even if your item is in two categories, and you do a search, it will only come up once. At least that's how I interpret it.

You also have to pay double for optional features such as category featured, highlighted, gallery. How nice.

I sell in anywhere from 2 to 8 categories at the same time selling the identical same item at dutch. I often sell out in one category and have people running the bid up over the opening bid price while others are sitting unbid in another category. So I believe some people not only search by category -- I think some still just BROWSE and never search at all. Usually brand new buyers.

...just don't try to relist and add the second category....it doesn't work. At least it doesn't work if you follow the pull down menus, only if you type in the number of the second category.

For you eBay types who monitor this board "it doesn't work" = it's functionality is f'd

What I would like to know is this. I had 7 auctions set up to go on tonight from AuctionWatch to eBay. They all had an error message which was 'two categories refused'. I know it has something to do with the new option on having two categories but I'd like to know if anyone else has had this problem and if so, were you able to launch from AuctionWatch to eBay? I like to create and keep all my auctions on AuctionWatch so I'm hoping there is a way around this.

macandjan ..... I agree 100%, some folks do indeed search by category alone, and some folks simply browse. I will be more than happy to pay the extra fees for big ticket items.

Hey, here's a novel idea: ASK your customers how they search for the items they want!

82% of the sample I asked said they do keyword searches. Category browses take too long, especially on slow connections.

Sorry, Meg; sorry, Pierre; you won't be able to buy that vacation home in Ibiza because of me. Oh, the tragedy.
