Today I tried to deposit some US Post Office Money Orders (I have a US$ acct).
At first the bank refused to take them saying the US Post Office would not take them because there was too much fraud on the ones coming from Canada. After much screaming, they took the deposit but warned it could happen.
Has anyone else run into this problem?
This could turn into a nightmare.
Nick

My bank refuses them, but the PO is required to cash them since they issue them as long as they are in USD. You have to show your driver's license, but they cheerfully cash them for us.

I'm confused---are you a Canadian cashing US postal money orders--or are you an American cashing Canadian Postal Orders??

Never had a problem with US$ MO's at my bank; but here's a new thang; I got a personal CHECK from a guy in Canada who wrote "$9.51 US FUNDS" in the number box on the check, and wrote out Nine Dollars & --- 51/100. Looks like one of our US checks; I deposited it whilst looking away and whistling; holding as per normal to wait to see what happens before I mail item (Notified bidder of this as well) I guess he could have a US account, but why bother writing 'US Funds' on it??

He's using his Canadian Fund account but has instructed his bank (by writing US funds) to negotiate the cheque in US dollars---the service charge from the bank is quite hefty when you do this.

If the M.O. are the domestic(green) postal, they are not negotiable in Canada. They must be the pink international type.We always specify this in our email.Other than that problem, our bank,The Royal has never refused or even questioned any U.S. postal money orders.

No problems with the Bank of Montreal, they'll deposit anything I take to them.

It seems the Royal might be changing their position on USPS MO's after this story was released.

Zazzie.. EEK! Thanks for letting me know, I'll have to monitor the outcome then. If I get charged heftily (is that a word??) I reckon I'll have to negotiate with the guy who sent it. He told me I'd have no probs at all. (grumble grumble grumble)

ok, here's a question. I noticed a few posts above that the comment was made the the bank wouldn't cash the green postal money orders... only the pink international ones.

I just paid a seller in Canada the sum of $700 for an auction. I paid with an international postal money order. The seller said I didn't have to go to the extra expense of getting an international one as he is frequently paid in the green domestic ones and his bank has never had a problem negotiating them.

I asked if he uses a bank across the border on the US side and he said no. He lives in Victoria, BC. Any thoughts on this? I thought to prevent fraud the only thing that could be used to pay them was the pink version.

I used that one just to be sure it could be negotiated.

Avaloncourt ..... My Canuck Bank has no problem accepting the green Domestic USPS MO's, but some Canuck Banks won't take them.

Jeando---sorry I scared you---what I meant to get across was the service charge that his bank in Canada will charge him will be a biggie. I have no idea what your bank will do with it.

We use pay accounts receivable that way at the place that I worked ---none of the shippers ever commented on whether they got charged by their bank or not

My bank accepts the Green domestic ones too--it depends on the bank--some don't---but I'm not going to have a discussion with the teller about it just in case they are actually making a booboo.

As suggested, it evidently depends upon the bank. I have purchased many things from Canadians. Some sellers have no problem cashing domestic US postal mo's, some don't. One seller sent domestic mo back saying that they were not negotiable in Canada; the next week a Canadian seller actually requested that method of payment.

It seems to be a regional/local thang... I buy a lot from Canada, (from the US) and when it's a Western Province (B.C., Alberta) the greenie is usually asked for. When it's an Eastern Province the pinkie is what is asked for.

EOA usually says what they want, but I send many green domestics to Canada and never a qualm.

Seems after the 'quasi-fraud report', the banks are being more careful. I had a teller question a pink one for the first time ever.

The US Postal Service did such a great job of saber rattling that they nearly made their MO's totally worthless.

We just have to stop money-laundering for our neighbors

In February, I opened an account with RBC as a result of learning from AW threads that they would accept the green USPS money orders for deposit. No problems till today. Suddenly they refused to take them without any explanation and there was a minor opera over this between me, the teller, and the manager. Now, as a result of reading REDDEER'S link to the Toronto Star story re money laundering, I understand the pall that fell over the bank when I made a scene about their "changed policy". Thanks, REDDEER, for providing that. I will no longer be accepting these as payment but have a more liberal cheque policy.

I have cashed hundreds of regular US postal money orders at my branch without any trouble. There are NO service charges ever and there should not be as long as you are a good customer of that bank. I have always allowed the "domestic green" ones to be sent as they are cashed without problem, even though they say negotiable in the US only. You just have a bad bank.

[ edited by guuuyyy on Oct 23, 2000 04:22 AM ]keep in mind, that it costs your U.S buyers extra money as well for an Int'l money order. Like i said, i have been accepting the regular us postal money orders for a long time and NO PROBLEMS.

I noticed on my kids' play money, it was a pink bill with a purple chicken. In big letters it said PLAY MONEY. THen in small print it said "not negotiable. not valid as currency." I wondered who would miss the big words PLAY MONEY, miss the purple chicken, but notice the small print. So I took it around to stores to see how they would react. Of course they all rejected it. But in one 7-11 the clerk said, "You can't fool me. If you pay in Canadian money, I discount it 30%."

Hello:

I went to the Post Office on Saturday and tried to cash a Canadian Money Order. They refused to cash it stating they didn't have money on hand and I could come back later. I complained as they should have money available to cash.

Today I took it to another Post Office and it took 15 mins to get it cashed as Canada has new Money Orders and he couldn't get his system to except the transaction. Finally a supervisor was able to get the transaction through. The bank will charge you a fee if you take international money orders to them.

I do very little international business because of the extra time.
