I have got to be honest:
When I read about fellow Ebayers including "free gifts" with items they have sold, it makes my skin crawl! What is this, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood?
Is this an auction site or a ladies tea?
"Oh, I just love my buyers! Whenever I sell a video tape, I include a packet of popcorn!"
...or
"Whenever I send out an item, I always include a little stuffed bear and a thank you note".
Oh please, pass the alka seltzer. I think I'm going to puke.

I don't know whose auctions you were looking at, I also enclose a small gift with most purchases, and ALWAYS a Thanks you note, but I don't advertise the fact that the winner will get some lagniappe; it is just a pleasant surprise they get when they open their package.
ALSO, if I feel an item has been bid quite high, I just automatically give the buyer FREE shipping. That isn't in my ad either, but a pleasant surprise they get when they get their winning notice.
There is nothing wrong with good customer relations.

That's something to consider. If you add those extras to the deal and you get a buyer like stantman what have you gained? Then again you have to consider the odds of finding a buyer like that.
Now that I've thought it out, go ahead and add the popcorn to the videos, I thought it was a great idea and a touch of class.

I like to send a little something with my bidders packages. Someone did that to me and it was such a nice little surprize.
I like little surprizes and I am sure other people do to. Plus, it makes me feel good.

As a seller, if the weight allows it, I'll throw in some Mardi Gras beads as surprise lagniappe. Many people have emailed that they were tickled over the beads!
As a buyer I've received a package with a dead cockroach in it, does that count as a bonus?

I always include a cockroach when a late payment is involved. If it died on the way I refuse to be held responsible.

Oh you're all just so wonderful!
Isn't Ebay shopping just wonderful!
Geeeez.
Whenever I receive a "free gift" I think to myself "this poor sap just wasted that much more of his measley profit on something meaningless."
His loss, my gain.
I'll just turn around and sell it, and include NO gift when I send it---after I overcharge a wee bit for shipping, of course.

Oh come on, admit it. You at least send some moldy pizza cheese and few dead ants. I mean, presentation is everything! And just think, ants are very tiny, and I'm sure they add nothing to the weight of the box.

Gee, all I ever get are little cards that have a scripture on it that tell me to repent. ummmm..
Recently I sold a pitcher with 8 glasses. I had an extra glass (smaller size) that matched and added it since it was the one and only. I thought it would be nice to surprise the person. When she emailed to tell me she received the package, I asked about the glass. Wellllll, she didn't know it was there and with all the paper, threw it away. So lesson learned - don't do that again without telling the person.

Was the item shipped in a used pizza box or wrapped in a single sheet of computer paper?

this could be a creative solution to the problems panty sellers are facing under the new ebay rules.
they could sell a completely unrelated item, brand new merchandise of any type, and include as a 'bonus gift' in the package, and perhaps even mention in the ad that the bonus gift will be vintage lingerie or panties
just think about all the bids i could get on my other auctions with that little marketing ploy!

enchanted, how about the used panties WITH a dead cockroach??
abingdoncomputers, naw, no moldy pizza or ants...I don't think I would buy from a seller that would do something like that (I do read feedback). heh heh!

mzalez, I was thinking more along the lines of a high class pair of clean vintage silk charmeuse tap pants from the 1930's, trimmed with lace. (just say no to the insects etc., not too cool)

Not at all, tinyman...It is your total lack of respect for fellow posters has us in a "tizzy", and your lack of respect for the owners of this board, who are tolarating you, out of compassion for your smallness...

Well; as 'Granny' would say, "I done stewed over this till it is time to put in my 2 cents!" I think this 'board' is the best one I have ever posted to; and I was directed here by one of your members...I still think it is the best! Now, as for these bonus thingies-I almost always do it- usually with a note that explains I have no idea if (the person) would even WANT what I put in; and if they choose to sell it; give it away, what ever, it is ok by me. The point being; I did it because I wanted to. Not for applause or recognition, or P.R.! Mama taught me, if you and a 'neighbor' have a disagreement; and 'aren't speaking'...when you pass in the car or what ever, just wave a little and go on; if THEY do not return it; then they are the ones who have 'acted ugly'! Mama was very smart. Kindness Can do many things, but it never hurts the one doing it! Thanks for letting me get it out. Hummm; what kind of pop corn is the best?
