i have a bidder that won an auction and paypal emails me and says they have cash for me. i dont except paypal and my terms state check or money order only. i emailed the bidder and very nicely explained it and she just keeps danceing around it and basically says well lets wait and see! she also says paypal will send a check to anyone even if they are not a member. is that true??
and this person also sells on ebay. cant she respect another dealers terms? now im worried about a negative feedback from her. i have emailed her and told her i want a money order or check and ask her to cancel the paypal payment. she says i should contact them.
i cant cancel it! i am p.o.'d
help please im going nuts on this one

No, they won't send a check to just anyone. You have to sign up as a member, and they recently instituted a $1.50 fee for issuing checks.

Tell her that she needs to go into her PayPal history and cancel the transaction, then pay you by some other means. If you explain again nicely and add that you don't want to pay the $1.50 check fee she should understand.

In my opinion yes she should respect your tos. Personally I would email her and tell her point blank that you don't accept paypal.

I use pp, but disrespect is disrespect in my viewpoint.

Rather than argue reasonably with to the bidder tell her you are unable to log on to PayPal because you're on an old computer and can't handle their security encryption. Tell them this is one of the reasons you can only accept the payments listed in the auction. Try telling the woman anything except "NO" some get all confused when you say or type that word.

My husband - who has never accepted PayPal and says nothing about accepting PayPal in his terms - gets "you've got cash!" emails from bidders every few days. He has a canned message that he sends them. Without fail, they've all managed to figure out how to cancel the transaction and send him a check or money order.

PayPal decided not to go with the $1.50 check fee after all. But you cannot get ANY kind of payment from PayPal unless you sign up.

a) she may be fishing for a referral fee (or is that kapput now? don't remember!)

b) Personally, I wouldn't let someone force me into something for fear of a neg. You can always respond to the neg with the facts, that she would not honor the TOS.

That happened to me too...lots of times. Finally, I put in the description, at the top, I DONT TAKE PAYPAL SO DONT ASK!!! They got the drift. One gal paypal'd the money to me anyway, and when I told her to READ the description again, and READ my email contacting her with the total, she got all pushed out of shape and said I SHOULD take paypal because I was selling on ebay and THOSE ARE THE RULES. I didnt bother to respond to that bit of wisdom...just relisted it and will get a credit from ebay from her winning bid. Sheesh.

Let me say first of all that I do use PayPal successfully for about 20% of my auctions. The issue here isn't "PayPal Good Or Bad" (there are other ongoing discussions on this topic elsewhere). Rather . . the high bidder is not complying with the terms and conditions of the sale. In eBay's fine print it is clear that any terms and conditions placed by the vendor on the Auction Page are, to use a Scottish Legal term "of the essence", that is to say they form part of the contract entered into when a potential buyer places a bid.

The fact remains that you haven't been paid . . .treat it as you would any other non payer. OK you may get a neg feedback comment but remember 1. You can respond to that 2. Any reasonable future bidder would see your point 3. You can proceed with a non-payment bidder alert against the buyer.

NPBA is one of the most powerful tools in the vendor's arsanal. The email sent to non payers by eBay is polite but to the point and as far as I recall "did not accept terms and conditions" is one of the options listed on the NPBA form. Nine times out of ten an NPBA does the trick. If it doesn't apply for a refund of commission and a Non Payment Notice will be recorded against the bidder. Three of them and they are OFF eBay.

thanks everyone for the support. i have decided to take this as far as it must go, neg or not. i cant let a negative stand in the way of doing business with rules. i have received another email from the bidder that stated "this d%&$ (item) better be worth it". so i smell trouble no matter what. but im so punch drunk from all the crashes and down time i might as well have a neg as my cherry on top. but i will respond to the neg and hopefully anyone who reads it will at least see i stand firm on my tos.

i am starting to wonder if paypal still has the 5 dollar award for converting people. that might have been the game.

I accept Paypal so I guess I really can't relate to your dilemna. Part of the problem may be this (as stated on Paypal):

"Pay anyone with an email address - even if they don't have a PayPal account!"

The problem is it doesn't state that the seller then has to signup for Paypal in order to use get their money. I only found this out by going to the help menu. I have never tried it when paying for an auction if the seller doesn't accept Paypal. Just trying to be polite, I guess, by paying the way the seller wishes.

Maybe your seller saw that and thought it doesn't matter whether or not you have an account with Paypal. It is very misleading.

I think it's worth having a PayPal account merely for the convenience on eBay or Yahoo.
However, it's up to you. Most bidders have a hard time dealing with the different terms of sellers.

Most bidders have a hard time dealing with the different terms of sellers.

I think "most" is an overstatement, but it's clear that's the case for some bidders. I don't know why it should be that way, though, especially with payment options. If I go to a restaurant that doesn't accept checks, I pay with cash or with a credit card. If I go to a gas station which doesn't have a pay at the pump device, I don't stand outside the gas station demanding a keypad and a slot to run my card through, I go inside.

Pushy bidders like this need to realize that, like the real world, not all sellers are going to have the same terms.

Edited because I thought it would be important to add that I won't go to a gas station which doesn't allow me to pay at the pump unless I absolutely have to. Convenience means a lot to people, and PayPal is convenient.

Just for the record, what part of the PayPal sign up bothers you? Giving them your email address or a street address?

Everyone,

The poster with the unsavory name has been suspended, for obvious reasons.
