Hi everyone!

I have been selling on eBay for about 2 months now. In the last week, I have started to put up more items and I was hoping that you could take a look at a couple of closed auctions and offer some pointers.

Here are a few urls:

Successful:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=464290726

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=465238171

Unsuccessful:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=464290755

I would really like to continue listing and hope to become more successful, so any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Jane

Your listings look good! I'd probably try relisting the mystery magazine in a different category like Books : Mystery (if that category exists). I love the kitschy cover.

Thanks, RainyBear!

I never thought about listing it under books - that's a great idea!

(I'm kind of limited on what I sell right now - lack of camera - and not everything scans well...but I'm hoping to earn enough on these early ones to pay for the camera....)

I appreciate the feedback....

Listings look good, very good in fact. Lot better than most out there.

If you're new and your listings look this professional, me thinks, you'll do great!!!

I'm sure you already do. But best suggestion is just keep reading AW threads, you can learn a lot here.

Thanks, Napcruz!

After the day I had in the real world, I needed that boost!

Yes, I am new to this - I work in computers for a living, and before that 15+ years dealing with people, so I'm hoping the combination of the experiences will help me!

I have noticed that this board is great for tips and sharing experiences - I've already learned a lot here!

I appreciate the comments! (If I could only sell enough to tell the rl job bye-bye....just wishful thinking at this point!)

I'm for a weird observation: you have Visible Counters!

You know, I always felt that counters that were visible eventually scared away potential bidders. That failed auction had 49 when I looked at it. Imagine if I was looking to buy and saw that 48 others had turned up their noses at it? It'd make me think twice about placing a bid on it!

Just a thought.

jmjones They look really good to me. Easy to read, clear and concise. I like the template you used. Also, I know how you feel about lack of a camera. With baby #4 due in December, a digital camera is not an option here. I use my scanner whenever possible and I also take good quality photos with my Canon 35mm, then scan.

Borillar That's a pretty good point about the visible counters. I never really thought about it that way, as I use visible counters myself. I guess some people do think that way.

Good luck with your other auctions, jmjones....

Tim

Borillar - I never thought about it either - I was thinking more of the lines that popular websites breed more hits - but I think you might be right about auctions - not quite the same thing.

Thanks!!

Honaker - I can relate about the kids - I have 4 myself! Luckily, one is out of the house - one is a sr in high school, but I still have two toddlers - forgot how much they can cost!

Thanks for the reviews!

I think the best place for you to put the Mystery Magazine should be listed under Magazines / Pulp. If you check out that category you'll find a lot of similar type magazines.

LOOK AT YOUR IMAGE SIZE!: I've been keeping mine under 40kb! It looks like some of yours are way over 100kb! I may be wrong about that! I know that folks with WEB-TV or 56 modems have a real SLOW go with images over 40kb! FWIW!

I have to agree that large image files are a detriment. Check out the image processing software you use with your scanner. You should be able to reduce the file size by either scanning at a lower resolution (400-500 ppi) or downsizing the images (I usually use 500 pixels for the narrowest dimension).

I guess I was using the reverse psychology on the counter thing--maybe it depends on what category you're working in. Now that we have that lovely "Watch" feature to contend with, my thinking was that bidders would look at a higher counter number, know there's a lot of interest and assume that a number of those users has put the item on their "Watch" lists. I can see where high counter numbers/low or no bids would have been a deadly combination before the "Watch" feature existed. I think now it's a clue that maybe the starting price is too high.

I really like your background and print color! Fantastic!!!

The only change that I would suggest is to
eliminate the border around the pics. I
guess it is a frame?

Just a couple of examples of a picture without a border from
my sold auctions to illustrate what I mean by no border pics.

Please feel free to critique my auction also.
We can all learn something from this thread.

HJW: I don't like to see borders around clickable images either, on the web. But I think they're important on eBay, because it emphasizes the fact that you can click on the image and bring up a larger version of the item.

Glenda,

You are right. I didn't consider that option.

Unless the pictures are significantly reduced
in size, I wonder if the clickable deal is
really necessary? Right now, the pictures
are very clear and I think the size is perfect.

Huh?

Whats wrong with 2 out of 3
I think that is way better than average these days

Hey!

I would consider 1 out of 3 great!

This new seller just asked for a critique.
Her auctions look great to me...very
professional!

Two out of three all the time would be great - I do a lot of hit and misses - I think I average about 40% sell through rate - I don't know if that's good, bad or otherwise, since I'm trying different things to see what sells.

I did catch on to the photos, and have reduced the size on most of the newer auctions - I think I'll have to experiment on the border thingy to see what seems to work best.

Thanks to everyone who posted comments! I do appreciate it.

Helen - the only comment I have is about using red - from a systems standpoint in the real world, we tend to stay away from it except for instances where we want people to stop what they are doing (it's used as a danger color!) But that's just something that we use and may not be universal - so I have developed an aversion to it!
