The sig is so tiny even my eagle eye daughter cannot make it out. It has enough letters to spell Steuben but the first letter looks more like a fancy H. after this what I think actually does say Steuben...there is a lone g (small case)
It has that fantastic Steuben quality but am afraid to list as Steuben and I do so hate the ? in my titles.
Anyone recognize this penguin?

My Steuben are older pieces but clearly say Steuben to the naked eye & the "S" is easily recognizable.
Is the signature acid etched?
Of course, companies have been known to change a logo, Lalique did.

I believe it is diamond point as I can feel it. (just barely) but can scrape it with my fingernail. The sig is tinier than I have ever seen, the H could be an S with the crossed T through it, (it is that hard to see) I am just not at all sure. I have tried to look at it thru magnifying glass and that is no help.
I've been trying to search the net for Steuben penguins but have found only a couple and they are large and not like this one.
I have had a pretty good number of Steuben (modern) pieces go thru my hands and this penguin feels like the real deal.

There are a few Steuben animals listed on eBay with very clear images of the signature.
Sometimes with a small signature I scan and enlarge the image to see it, (sometimes it works.)

I don't have a scanner but have a good dig cam and just couldnt make it work tonight. I will try to get one in the light of day and enlarge it tomorrow.
Thanks

As far as I know, Steuben only made one penguin and that was the one with the separate wings on the side. Unless they made a different one in the last few years, this is the only one I know of.

I will eventer. The crystal looks so much like Steuben it is amazing another company can do this! No bubbles, silvery light catching metal. I may never be able to read this danged sig so may never know. It should do well on ebay anyway tho.

Have you tried rubbing something sooty over the mark with your fingertip? Sometimes that can help......

I bought some steuben muddlers a set of six at a high brow online auction last year. They said they were signed some odd name like turbine..I could see immediately they were steuben, tho I thought they were knife rests. (thats what they called them) anyway won them for a ridiculous price and when they got here...sure enough they were signed Steuben not turbine.
I suppose I may be wrong on this one since I can find no other penguin besides the one with the wings. alas

Have you asked N-sis? I believe she owns every book known to woman. There's a book devoted solely to glass animals...but, I don't happen to own it...

I will ask her
I dug up a better magnifying glass and my daughter tells me the first letter does appear to be an H.

Why not call Corning and the Glass Museum up there and ask their opinion? You can FAX your pic and end all indecision.

I thought I heard someone calling
Now, I have a couple books on Steuben - One is a Steuben Glass Christmas book for 1972. The 6 1/2" penguin is in there but it also shows many of thier animals made in several sizes and different motifs. Several of the animals have the same exact eyes as your penguin Kel and the piece screams good quality. It may be more recent than 1972. I think it may be a great idea to call the Corning Glass Co. or the Corning Museum or send them an email if you can find an address. Also there is an auction called Just Glass that has a question board. I am trying to find all my glass books that may help but they all got discombobulated during my vacation. I take a few with me - always the wrong ones
I have been dealing with the damn "health issues" since vacation and I am just getting on my feet where I can function. I have to type one handed because of a bum shoulder but even that is coming along and I put away the sling for now!
So, I will try to help, I love research and I WANT to give some to ya, Kel.
Geez, it is after 11:00 pm and I am gonna go hit the sheets but y'all know my email is always open and I will answer ASAP.
Gosh, it's so good to see ya Toke-sis and to have you and Kel in the same thread is just happy time for me

As it would be politically incorrect to pass a bong at this joyous meeting of friends. I will instead blow y'all a kiss.
Thanks Nobs-sis for your input.
I'm for bed as well, not because I'm hurting, but because I've spent my fall break locked up with the kids because of rain.
