I found this at a garage sale about a month ago for $2.00 and figued what the heck. Not sure if I know how to do an image but here goes.
On the bottom it says Wilcox (something) & CO. and then there is something crossed like 2 images, and then International & CO. and then the numbers 1951. It is all tarnished and am afraid to clean it if it does happen to be valuable. (my luck, not) lol

It might be OK to polish. I have sold quite a bit of silverplate over the years, and my sales clerk, who loves to polish silver, has never had a problem wearing through to the base unless a problem already existed.
How much silver comes off when you polish depends on what you use and how hard and long you rub. Certainly do not use the "dip" type silver cleaner. Rather, use a high quality cream, a very soft cloth, apply sparingly, let set for a little while and then, again with a very soft cloth, clean the polish off and buff gently.
We use a polish called "Howards" I think, but my English sales clerk (who's been polishing silver for 60 years or so) prefers Haggarty's.
