Whats up with this? Today I received payment for an item with no shipping costs included. I get at least one a week and sometimes more. They range from newbies to 300+ feedback. I realize once in a while people forget to add (up) the shipping, but my emails are really explicit and explain the totals. (one person told me she felt like she was in third grade) Since I have been stung 4, count 'em four times, I hold all packages until I get the postage. Perhaps this is an honest mistake or perhaps they don't have all the money, who knows. Perhaps they think I am too stupid to check to make sure they send the correct amount. Actually once time I was too stupid and sure enough payment was minus the shipping. I didn't double check the amount, sent the package and I got the check is in the mail routine. bam, that stung - a self inflicted wound. ummm I feel better now! thanks

That's amazing that you get that many. I've sold over 2000 items on ebay, and only about 2 people didn't include the shipping charge. How exactly do you state the total price in your EOA e-mail?

I've run into one very active buyer who does this all the time. Seems that he can't understand that shipping costs are a necessary part of the transaction and that most of us do not use shipping costs to add to our meager profits. I do all my auctions with fixed price shipping and if bidders don't like the cost which is clearly spelled out, they do not have to bid.
I will NOT ship anything if I do not get the entire amount due. One email to the bidder to explain and a DEADLINE for receipt of rest of funds or NPB is filed.

I have never had a bidder not send shipping amount yet. In my end of auction notice, I list the bid amount and directly under that the shipping amount, and then a line under that and then the Total Due amount. I have seen some end of auction notices that look like this:
Thanks for being the bidder, please send $xx.xx for your bid, plus $x.xx for shipping + $x.xx for insurance, plus $x.xx for delivery confirmation. There are days when I have to get my calculator out just to make a payment - LOL.
Actually, I did receive an email like that, and I calculated wrong by .17. The seller emailed me and told me I shorted him .17. Had to send another Paypal payment. I felt stupid, but also felt he could have taken the extra step to put in a Total Amount Due just to make sure us lamebrains can't count.
Maybe it is in the way that you word your end of auction letter.

I am certianly not saying that llama_lady's EOA' are not clear, I've had my share on 'non readers'. I just wanted to show what I say on my EOA's.
Your total for this auction is XX.XX (XX.XX plus $3.20 for shipping). That way, the first number they see (in case they glaze over the rest) is the one they need.
I've never had anyone short me on the shipping, but that could just be because I'm lucky.

I use ebud with their EOA letter format modified for my use. They automatically put the grand total amount due in the subject line of the email. Down in the body of the letter, the grand total is again listed with a breakdown of the costs (bid + Shipping + insurance + tax, etc.).
I have never been stiffed on the shipping however, I have had a couple send the grand total PLUS the shipping (again!). I guess that's cause I always try to list the shipping cost if I can in my auction's description.

Just inform the buyer that they have purchased the item. However, without shipping, it can not be shipped. Anything left in the shop after thirty days becomes the property of the shop. Period.
My problem is always with sales tax. Even though I send a "Total Amount Due", I still get buyer who use their own calculation table to determine the sales tax and it always works out in their favor. Amazing....

I find that those who short sellers are either an honest goof or a deliberate attempt to get the seller to just ship the item on their own nickel.
I'd file an NPB alert (it's a TOS violation to not pay in full) and send an email that the shiping needs to be received in ten days.
This usually puts the weasel group on notice and helps speed it up.

Here's something to try that works for me.
On the Subject line of each EOA notice I send, I put the Item #, Description, and Total $ of the transaction. That way they don't even have to read my email to find out how much they owe me, and it's pretty plain for them to see when they read their email. It's a good way for me to keep track of my email too!

Just got another one without shipping yesterday. The bidder has over 500 feedback, and knew quite well what he was doing.
His reply? "Shipping costs should be figured into your costs of doing business. I'm tired of being charged extra for something it is your thing (?)"
Huh??? My shipping charge doesn't even cover all my expenses.
How does that justify trying to cheat me out of the postage without so much decency as to state his beliefs up front?
Oh, I asked him why he bid, if he wasn't ready to meet the stated postal costs.
"I'm tired of passing up auctions because sellers terms are unfair or un-businesslike."
If all the bidders were like this, I'd jump out a window.

Dear Mr Bidder:
I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate experiences with your purchases through online auctions. Unfortunately, since I start my auctions out with a low opening bid and the final bid is determined by the bidders, I am unable to incorporate my shipping costs into the final bid total. Because of this, I include the shipping costs as a fixed amount in the auction listing, in order that bidders may take it into account when determining their bid. If you are not satisfied with the rate I quoted for shipping, please subtract that amount from the total due, and remit your payment. You may contact the shipper of your choice to make whatever arrangements are required to pick up your item and once your payment is received, I will hold your item for you, awaiting your instructions. Thanks for bidding.

No, come on. You definitely don't have a 'I am stupid sign on your back'. Hey you are on of the smartest dudes of hazzard here. (dudes or gal hey come on don't be so PC).
But you do have a Kick me sign on your back tho'. Now who is the one that stuck that note on your back is absolutely childish.
Just kidding

My EOA's are formatted much like lotsafuzz's are and I have *never* had a bidder forget to include shipping.
I put the total on a line by itself before mentioning any sort of "breakdown" of charges.
Dear bidder;
Thank you for winning the widget. I offer blah blah payment options for your convenience.
Please remit $XX.XX to:
Me
123 blah street
blah blah blah
This amount includes your bid of $X, $X Shipping, and $X insurance. Blah blah.
Thanks.
So that's what works for me, knock wood, 2 years selling and not a single person has shorted me. Not counting the ones who just don't pay at all! LOL
Azrae
I would have immediately wanted to tell this guy to try buying something at Amazon.COM, Buy.com, eToys, Petsmart.com, etc., and try giving THEM the same line about shipping costs!! The audacity.. arrrgh! How did you respond???

I have had two people this week do the exact same thing. I have been selling on ebay for over a year and never had this problem! Is there something going on with our bidders that I am unaware of? My shipping and handling charges barely cover expenses, but paying them is sure making my customers angry! They are stated on my auction pages. Why do they bid if they have a problem paying the $2.00. I have be debating raising my selling price and lowing my s/h to please them.
