Wondering: Are there any sellers out there that ONLY accept online payments (PayPal, PayDirect, ExchangePath, etc.)? Does it affect the number of bids that you get? I'm just kind of tired of the promise that the payment is "in the mail". With online payments, I know within the first few days (a week max) if I'm going to get paid or not. With money orders, I get strung along for a month for nothing. Just curious.

Speaking as a buyer: I don't use online payment services. If you won't take my check I won't bid.

gjsi,
What about a seller who would gladly accept your check -- through an online payment service?

Be flexible or die. People who restrict payment options are asking for lower sales.

but if you are lossing them anyway !!!due to the fact they lie and never send the money...you many think you get less bids ..but if the bids never pay then...because they never send the money...on line payment is better because you can relist faster and resell it if the money is not sent within a certain time ..yes less bids but more time to resell ...this means in the end more money and more money means that you are doing somthing right!!!!

I accept just about any online payment method and money orders/cashier's checks. Since I quit accepting personal checks my auctions have not suffered at all - and it's been probably close to 6 months since I've accepted checks. Way too many bounced checks here too - not worth it.

I tried it back in the summer and it didn't seem to matter. One bidder right after another (and most with very high feedback) would bid and then tell me that they don't use online payment services so they will send a check. It was VERY frustrating to deal with a bidder that refused to follow PAYPAL or BILLPOINT ONLY terms. So I stopped it and went back to the old way of accepting snail mail methods or online either.

amalgamated2000: not sure how this works, but if I send a check to an online service and then they send out the money when I let them know, the answer is NO. I am perfectly capable of handling my own money and writing my own checks.
If a seller will not accept my check (115+ positive feedback), I won't bid. If it is an item I want, I may email and ask if they will accept a check (before the auction ends of course), if not, then they just lost a bid (if I really want the item, I might do a PO Money Order, but that is a 30 minute wait at the PO).
So, yes in some cases it WILL affect sales.

There are some that aren't comfortable with online payments. My dad takes his wallet out of his pocket before he'll get within 20 feet of a computer, he's heard about those hackers that can get your credit card information if you get it too close to the monitor. Many are terrified of electronic checks, they know a friend who knows a friend who heard of a fellow that lost their entire savings by entering a checking account number on a computer.
Paranoia is alive and well with computers still, if you doubt that I only have to remind about the hype a year ago this time when the news services were counting down till the dreaded Y2K bug.

IMO, it's sales suicide.
I backed out of an auction the other day that stated PayPal only. Now, I've been using online payment services for forever, PayPal linked to my x.com debit card and account. Since PayPal has become IMO "unstable", I have taken all my money from my x.com account, am no longer using that debit card, and have no money in my PayPal account either. I have no other credit cards so at the moment I have NO way to fund that account without sending a check or MO in to PayPal. Yuck, who has time for that? I could give them access to yet another bank account, (no thanks!) which would STILL take 3 or 4 days to approve/add the account, then another 3 or 4 days to fund it.
So, I backed out of that auction because it would have been entirely too much trouble for me to use PP right now.
I have no problem getting a MO and I have yet to "default" on an auction as a buyer or seller so if all you are getting is deadbeats promising snail mail payments then I feel for you... but IMO you need to tighten up ship and start re-listing without waiting for a 1000 excuses to come in (I'm just assuming here that perhaps you are a bit "too" patient, I could be way off)... and then you don't end up spending an inordinate amount of time waiting for payments that never come.
Just my $.02, but I won't bid on a PP only auction unless it's VERY rare, HIGHLY desirable, AND still semi-convenient for me to get funds into my PP account.

uaru- ROTFLAMAO!! That's hysterically funny!
If you won't accept my postal money order, you definitely won't get my bid.
I wouldn't pay by exchange path after they badly bungled my requests to change email addresses and/or add my 2nd email address to my account. Their customer service SUCKS. I wouldn't even consider paying by PayPal. And, I would pay by PayDirect if I had money lying around in my account, but you can never count on that....

I personally accept personal checks and money orders and paypal for anything thing over $20, and paypal for any amount if it is a electronic check or debit because paypal doesn't charge that against your $500 limit/6months. Won't upgrade because of the fees. most of my stuff sell for under $10.00. And they charge their fees on the total which includes shipping/ins. I have been on ebay amazon and yahoo for over 4 years and have only had 2 bounced checks. And the bidders made good on the checks.

As a seller, I no longer use Online Payments...
As a bidder, I run from "C.C. Payments Only".

I offer everything but personal checks. I've received more than my share of bounced checks and refuse to deal with them any more. I was afraid my auctions would hurt if I quit accepting checks but I was wrong! Didn't hurt my sales at all.

I find that some people pay slower because of the PayPal option. It is not a panacea, it is a convenience. It no more guarantees payment than any other method.
I know many bidders who do not bid because they prefer one method and the seller does not offer it.
I generally prefer to pay by check;if a seller wants a money order on an inexpensive item, he may not get my bid or he may not get my maximum bid because I have to underwrite his paranoia and lack of trust.

I agree with mballai. MO's cost me an extra fee plus a trip to the post office. I was thinking of signing up for PayPal, then all the ruckus started breaking loose about changes in terms and so forth, so I'm going to stick with mostly personal checks and the occasional money order for now. Even if I did sign up for PayPal, a seller who took only online payments would strike me as a poor businessperson and inflexible and in too much of a rush to get the money. I prefer someone who is more flexible and will not drop dead if it takes me a few days to get a payment out.

Well I personally still Accept checks and moneyorders myself but the days of these two payment option in online auction are numbered.
with the comeing of companys such propay where the buyer dont have to be registed with them to pay by CC check and money order days are numbered. online auction right no is the one of the few areas on the web you can pay this way still.
infact the days of checks and money orders anywhere is number as they are testing debit cards for every thing from parking meter use to buy bubble gum from the penny gum machines.
infact I seen on Cable there is a town right now that has agreed to test the cash free debit card life styal no cash for nothing everything done with a cards they were issued there is other citys around the world running the same test and this testing seems to be going very well.
They are not forcasting the end of Cash and coins them selves in the near future but they are seeing the end of the days of lost in the mail money orders and bounced checks if the testing goes well its said that by 2005 all banks will simply give checking and bank account holder debit cards no longer issue checks at all .

I totally understand why money orders are a pain in the hindquarters. I never pay with a money order. (Although, I don't know why you all go to the Post Office for them. They're $0.35 at the grocery store with no (extra) wait. Just buy some lettuce, a jug of milk, and a money order.) It's PayPal, etc., only for me. I'll pay with a check if it's something I really want. I just hate the wait.
As far as accepting checks, I'm too wary of the old bounce-a-roo. A lot of sellers hold them for 10 days, but I've heard that an out of state check could take a month to bounce. Then you're out your merchandise AND a big old NSF fee from your bank. I guess there's just no good solution.
