Are there any furniture people out there who could help me identify this vanity chair? I don't know much about it--I bought it at a garage sale about 12 years ago, and all I know is that as I was carrying it to my car some guy followed me the whole way begging me to sell it to him. I just love the twisted legs on this little chair. It's painted black with gold trim, and the seat part has some sort of bumpy repair on it that has been there as long as I've owned it. I'm thinking of selling it but don't know where it ought to go. I hope this works because I've never tried to post anything with a picture before. Thanks!

Hi: It is very likely that your chair is not in original condition. It is most likely oak, or perhaps walnut. Dating from the 1930's or 40's.....and most likely pre-World War 2. Also, it is MHO that it is NOT a vanity chair, but id from a telephone table/stand, which I have seen in this form [with the rope or barley twist legs] but not as a vanity chair.
Of course, someone else opinion may be different.
My opinion of value is almost assuredly under 100.00 and in some parts of the USA well under 50.00 On 'the net'? Who knows.
Good luck.

Yep definitely a "gab center" chair. There should have been a small table that went with it to hold a telephone on the top and a place for the phone book under. I have a walnut one in original condition, but I don't think I have ever seen one in black.

I agree...went with a phone stand. The tells are the low back and lack of a front stretcher. The turnings on the legs are called "barley twist." It surely wasn't painted initially.

Thank you all so much for your help! This forum is great. Hmmmm...guess I got my dollar's worth when I bought this chair <g> Now I'm real interested to find out what kind of wood it is. Guess it's time for a little wood stripping. Thanks again.
