I am having a problem and I don't know if it my computer or the internet or what. When I click on a link to go to a site I am getting the following error message,

"Bad request
Invalid request -- no address for host" blahblahblah.com

The weird thing is that I get this message only about 85% of the time. For example, I can click on a link that goes directly to my auction listings but I cannot go any where else on eBay. I was able to do a search from this site but I got the above error message when I clicked on any of the listings from my search I can also go to most places within the AW site.

It does not matter whether I type in the address or I click on a link. I am asking here because I can't get into my ISP's site or into microsoft's site.

Any ideas what the problem might be? I know very little about computers so all help is greatly appreciated. Please just type slow so I can understand!

thanks

HI,this is similar to the gray box i get error message. i use netscape hope this helps.funny i too was doing auctions & new very little about computers awhile ago.
1. i was trying to go to stuff & i had been kicked off the net..haha for hours..so check on the bottom right hand side for the little green tv..see if it's on.if not reconnect.
2.sometimes you have a very bad connection & you keep getting the error, you need to click on the - sign top right hand side(that holds wherever you were at the time at the bottom of screen) then go to green tv at bottom, double click. a box will come up hit disconnect..then reconnect..then go to bottom of screen click once and the previous page comes back up then hit reload at top...if it's a better connection it will work!
3.or it could very well be EBAY IS DOWN AGAIN,,ONLY SOME ODD THINGS WORK...SOMETIMES THEY PUT IT ON THE ANNOUNCEMENT BOARD SOMETIMES NOT..SO COMING HERE IS BEST TO SEE IF anyone else is having trouble.
here is the link to the ebay board(or go to Home page, click on top site map,go to announcements good to bookmark it haha need to check it often)
put this in your top bar & click enter direct to ann/board.

i still don't know a lot but i get by to do auctions & learn a lot from these boards.
GOOD LUCK,,,i know how it feels, you'll get it.it's fun .Pam Oregon

If you're still having troubles, try clearing your internet browsers cache and history files. Then a reboot and relog back on to the internet. If that doesn't help, post what browser and version you're using, and what ISP.

I agree many times these types of error messages are due to poor connections to the net through your provider.

Or loss of packets due to router problems that cause disconnects from ISP.
I suggest when you have this trouble watch two things this will tell you if the trouble is on your end or the server or router to the web page your trying to use.

Watch the modem screens in the tray if the two of them arent blinking there is nothing come to your computer or leaveing then chances are your provider could have disconected you sometimes they run into situations where they must reboot with no way to warn.

also when you click on any link if it comes up with out a domain name all IP numbers the server you are trying to get to usually means the website you are trying to get to has a problem usually means they are off line the name server is working but the server is down or totally over loaded with users.

another thing I found here is that now and then I have to replace the line in that goes from the phone jack to the computer every now and then this line will get hit or bumped a wire will end up lose and after a while the bad line will cause problems replacesing the line in wire from the jack to youre computer can do wonders to.

Rarely is these web conection problems a computer or program problem .

Some things to try (in about this order):

1. Reboot your PC
2. Try surfing the net at a non-busy time.
3. Try internet explorer instead of netscape
4. Reload netscape, either from a cdrom that you have handy or download from the net
5. Try a 30day free trial with another ISP, and/or try a free ISP.

These steps should help you determine if it is your computer, the internet, your browser, or your ISP.
