I am astounded at the mess they have made of the jewelry categories. I was sent an email with the line-up of proposed changes and additions in an email a while back, and this was NOT the way they had things categorized! The pink below that said they did these changes after listening to the users..may I just say BS!! I have had complaints (from customers) for a long time even BEFORE this change that my HANDCRAFTED jewelry was hard to find, and NOW its WORSE, they have completely removed the artist jewelry category! The impression I had was that they were going to be adding MORE categories to make things EASIER, not removing them all! I would also like to know what IDIOT suggested putting ancient/ethnographic in COSTUME??!! In my personal opinion, Costume jewelry should not even be a category, its simply much too vague, AND for most people, it implies "cheapness"...WOW..what an insult..

ALL sellers who want the categories changed back to the old send e-mail to ebay at [email protected]. If you are a BUYER and confused with the new categories and want the old ones back do the same, e-mail [email protected]

not only have I found ebay jewelry category frustrating, but it seems to be pretty much the same when advertising for estate sales...I went to one that advertised: antique fine jewelry...only to find 5-15 year old costume jewelry, not even collectible rhinestones, just fake gold-tone fad jewelry. It must be a mentality.

I stopped selling jewelry on eBay almost a year ago. I got tired of seeing people pay $6,000 for an old bakelite pin, but they wouldn't pay $22 for a sterling & gemstone pendant & earring set.

And it doesn't help to change the categories if they don't bother to police the listings.
I can't believe they got rid of the Artist Jewelry Category though! We had asked for that the last time and was thrilled to see it added. Where do they expect these items to go?

I sell gold necklaces, and usually run Featured Category auctions. With the new change the Feature Category listings have twenty times the items they did before the change.

On a busy week the Featured Category would have a maximum of 40 listings. Now it's closer to 800. Same ratio with Featured Gallery.

Needless to say I'm buried deep and may as well have lit up a cigar with the sixty bucks I threw away.

Hits on both Featured and Featured Category auctions have dropped by 80% or more and the hit/bid ratio dropped by half.

eMail to eBay forthcoming and it won't be pleasant.

Me, I just stick it in the General category for the type that I am selling in. Who bothers to go look at these sub-sub-subcategories anyway?

Hi All !

I am bumping this thread back to the top where it belongs. I wrote to Ebay with my suggestions (see below) before the changes were made, apparently all for naught. Since the change, I have written to [email protected] numerous times and all I get is a canned response to the effect that it may be a couple of weeks before they read the mail and then they may not respond. I proposed the following addition to the Jewelry category yesterday, take a look and tell me what you think. There are problems with all the categories but I am addressing only the category that is nearest and dearest to my heart....Artisan/Handcrafted Jewelry. I think that sellers who utilized the other jewelry categories are better able to convey their wishes to Ebay.

(NEW CATEGORY) HANDCRAFTED/ARTISAN

(Subcategories)

General* Beaded/Gemstone*
Native American*
Southwestern *
Ethnographic*
Victorian/Edwardian*
Gothic/Club Style *
Lampwork *
Wire/ Metalsmith*

We need fewer categories, not more. Jewelry buyers (including me) do not have the time to browse through all those sub-categories so guess which get short shrifted? Yes, the lesser known categories.

I know some artisans who would disagree that a separate category was essential -- they felt that category was a "wasteland."

Certainly write to eBay with your suggestions, but keep in mind that many jewelry sales are made by casual browsers who buy on impulse and through visual appeal.

And yes, I also sell exclusively vintage jewelry on eBay.
