Anyone else have an item you just can't bring yourself to sell, even though it's of no use to you anymore? This coat.. boy.. if it could talk. Was a fave of mine all through my tainted, troubled youth. (I wore it with ripped fishnets and combat boots and my platinum bleached blonde hair ) It was passed to me by my grandmother, a vintage Givenchy velvet. No way I can fit into it now, and if I could, where would I wear it? So, last year I decided to sell it, but it was too warm. I figured I'd wait til winter, and I figured by then I'd be able to "detach" from the item, but halfway through writing up a description for it last night I caved, and it went back in my closet to stay. I guess all the great things I was saying about it convinced me to keep it!

As a seller and a person often in need of rent money I sell the things I'd love to keep all the time.

Keeping stuff every now and then soothes the sellers soul. So keep it

I feel the same way about my WWII Army/Navy War Surplus Store Peacoat.

Hah! I've got the opposite problem! I've got one piece that sells everytime I list it. But everytime I list it, a Deadbeat wins it. This has happened 3 times in a row. Similar pieces have had no problem.

$15 for a cute 2-1/2 inch tall pink Rhodonite Gemstone Kitty. Can you believe it can't be sold?

Edited by me to add the pic

Get a set that looks like Anna Nicole Smith and they will sell faster than hotcakes.
Let me know where to get some if you find any.

BCB,

I'd never be able to sell that coat either! It's just too wonderful! I have a suit and a dress I can't sell either - even though my lifestyle now is very different than it was when I bought the items. Since they're both black, I rationalize by telling myself that one never knows when one might have to go to a funeral!

However I do have a live-in carpenter I might consider selling if the offer were right.

The coat is fab! I love old clothes. There is plenty of fabirc. If I were you, I would have an updated short jacket made out of it.
Make sure you KEEP the frogs on it, it really adds to its charm. That way you have have your coat and fit in it too!

DON'T have the coat cut short! that would ruin the integrity of the item! i know how you feel about not being able to sell an item in spite of your financial needs...just about everything i list i fall in love with! it's horrible, but it usually doesn't prevent me from selling the item. there have been times when i posted an item and thought "what have i done? i should have kept it!" but the moment passes...Vintage clothing, especially certain couture items are VERY collectible right now and can fetch high bids at auction houses like Sotheby's, etc...maybe this coat would be worth so much money that you will consider selling through them!sometimes thats a big motivator for me!

Oooh great coat! I'm salivating just thinking about running my hands over it!! I agree, don't sell it, don't cut it. After the kids are grown you could decide to go back to that wild thang you used to be and then you'll be glad U kept it. Not to mention you'll be the coolest gramma in town.

Don't sell it. Even if you make lots of money from the sale you will always miss the coat.

I had a favorite black hat I wore when I first met my husband and I wore it with a coat that he really liked on me. Years later I sold them on a yard sale and I regretted it forever. Last year on eBay I saw the Winter in New York Barbie with almost the identical outfit and the same hat. He purchased the Barbie for my Birthday so now I have that. I still miss my hat though!

Yeah, I'm going to hang on to it.. though I must admit if it were worth *big bucks* I might reconsider, I'm so broke right now! It'd have to be a fortune though. Right now I'm thinking hey, I may not ever be small enough to button it up again but I might one day wear it loose and open. I think it's about a size 10/12. I don't know. I used to wear it buttoned when I was a size 8/10/12 (oh, the fluctuation continues!) and my grandmother was always very slender so I can't imagine it being much bigger than a 12. I wish there was a way to alter it to make it fit without affecting the cut of the coat!

I've had other things in the past that I wanted to keep but sold anyway, but most of those things were things I'd found to re-sell, not stuff I'd owned for years. That's the hardest I guess; the personal items. I've landed some great 'finds' in the vintage clothing category that I would have loved to keep for myself but I sold them anyway, and it bugged me but not terribly so. This one is different though.

Borillar I don't know, that's a cute kitty though!! If my grandmother hadn't told us "no more knicknacks!" I would buy it for her. She loves all things feline.

Thankx All!RB: I wasn't trying to get a free listing on here, but I just had to put up this odd piece with so weird a history for everyone. Yes, I ship to Canada - I've got U-PIC after all! My email is [email protected]. I'm tired of paying non-refundable listing fees on this piece.

Ooh, what a gorgeous coat! I can relate to your not wanting to sell it. I had some boots which I absolutely loved in high school, tall black leather with pointy toes and a dozen silver buckles up the front of each one. I wore them with velvet bloomers and a crushed velvet jacket, and yes, my black fishnets and bleached blonde hair.

I hadn't worn them in years and knew I never would again (plus they frightened my husband), so I sold them last year on eBay. I really felt like I was selling a chunk of my past. I felt the same way selling my Rocky Horror Picture Show audience participation LP set, but I knew I'd never use it again, either.

I can usually bring myself to sell most anything, but if hubby likes it there's no chance. We have a pretty pink camphor glass hen on a raised nest which I'd love to sell, but I can't because he has some kind of unreasonable attachment to the thing. It can't be sentimental value since we bought it at an auction last year!

Don't sell the coat!!! Your Grandma gave it to you and you love it! Do you have daughters to pass it on to? Or will you ever? even if you don't you would probably regret selling it.

I wish I had something of my Grandma's, but I don't. If I did I'd never sell it.

My 2¢.

I do have the problem of getting attached to the things I sell. I only buy things I'd want in case they don't sell! So go figure.

RainyBear, I cracked up at your post. How funny!

Every auction I go to, I end up keeping at least something~a doll here, a piece of glass there. Most of our house is furnished in auction finds.
Our family heirlooms stay too~although so many of them are nothing special, just old.
I wish I wasn't so sentimental~but if I wasn't sentimental, I probably wouldn't be in this business!

I have a leather vest that I wore years ago when I sang with a band. It is size S and I am now more like an XL. I keep putting it in my yard sales but put a great big price on it so nobody will buy it!

Okay, Okay - I know many of you will hate this, but just hear me out.

Several years ago my grandmother passed away and she had a beautiful mink coat. My mom was an only child and then there are three granddaughters (me being one). What to do with grandmother's coat?? My mom sent the coat away somehwere and had teddy bears made for each one of us and gave it to us on the first Christmas my grandmother was no longer with us. We all cried! They are just adorable and more cherished than an old coat in the closet that nobody was going to wear.
This coat would make an awsome bear family!

P.S.
A "frog" is the closure on the coat.

Wonderful coat! I understand completely as I have a dress I wore to the prom in 1960 that continues to take up space here. Had a terrible evening so it is not the memories that hold me back-just the dress.

However, I have a lot of trouble parting with a lot of things! As I am out shopping a lot and bring home stuff by the carload, you can imagine what one small house looks like after a bit of time.

My family room is wall to wall shelves with stacks of stuff on every level surface. Now that I can't sell anything for a profit on ebay, my bigger problem is what to do with all this stuff so I can reclaim some semblance of a home.

I need a consultant or a major fire. Perhaps we should allow ourselves to keep 1 item for every year of our lives and then get rid of everything else.

I have a book that I treasure as much as you do your coat. But, I
felt a little guilty with this good book just sitting on the shelf
and I did need the money.

So, I put a bidding price on this book equivalent to my estimation
of it's value. Of course, nobody bid and the book is still on my
shelf.

Maybe that is what you should do with the coat. It's probably worth
a couple year's rent at least...a beautiful vintage coat that will never be
worn again. You can't loose. You will either sell the coat or
better yet, keep it.

Helen
