In fact, did several dumb things! I'm fairly new. First, I combined three auctions to save her shipping $$$. I do that a lot. SHE SEEMED SO NICE!
Second, I didn't check her feedback. SHE SEEMED SO NICE!. Third, I shipped before her check cleared. SHE SEEMED SO NICE!!! Needless to say, the check is still bouncing and after many e-mails and promises of payment I have lost hope. She has 32 positives and 11 negatives and is not registered. I caution everyone to be more
careful than I was -- it takes extra time to check feedback (and it's been so sloooooow getting around that I skip the step lots of the time). What have others of you done? Is there a way to retrieve losses due to
bounced checks? Isn't it against the law?
At least a misdemeanor? E-bay doesn't seem to protect against it in any way that I can see. What am I missing? Help from you more
experienced sellers out there, please!

I am so sorry about your luck, but don't beat yourself up too badly. First, checks. I had one bounce (my first one) and it took 30 days for my bank to finally inform me. So even if you hold the item for 7-10 days, doesn't mean the check will not bounce. Secondly, perhaps those negs weren't there when she bid. That has happened to me three times in the last couple of months. Stellar feedback and then no payment, I check again and wa-la, a bunch of negs.
Pull the personal information on your buyer and give her a call. Then follow it up with an email citing your telephone call. I'm not sure how to word the email but tell your buyer in a nice way that it is against the law to write bad checks. Request the amount she owes plus the amount your bank charged you for the bounced check in a money order. If she doesn't respond, I believe you can turn her in to authorities. The amount of the check written will determine whether or not it is a felony or a misdemeanor.
I've done more than my fair share of dumb things in my life, so you are not alone.
