If PayPal won't let you close your account even if it is empty, this is how you can handle it:

1) Remove any credit cards and bank accounts from the PayPal account.

2) Register for a free email address using garbage characters such as [email protected].

3) Register this email address with PayPal and confirm it. Don't use this email address for ANYTHING else. Just forget about it.

4) Remove any other email addresses from the PayPal account leaving only the new one registered.

5)Forget that the PayPal account even exists. No one will be able to send money to it unless by some stroke of luck they can guess the garbage email address which is highly unlikely.

6) Tell your bank not to allow any further ACH withdrawals from your bank accounts. Tell your credit card company that any attempts to place a charge to your credit card from x.com/paypal.com/confinity are unauthorized.

7) You're done.

If PayPal wants to do business this way fine. Leave them with a dead account wasting their server storage space.

I just put on my asbestos underwear so you that you all can flame me for this post.

I don't think your credit card company will be able to block charges from certain companies. I tried to have Discover block Furniture.com and they told me they were unable to do it.

However, you can close your credit card account and get a new one.

Is paypal like the mafia--once you're in you can never get out?

Why wouldn't PP let you cancel your account? I had no trouble cancelling mine at all.

I have no idea. There are several posts currently on these boards about users being unable to close their accounts even though there are no funds in them.

One poster has been trying to close his account for 2 months. He contacted PayPal and they keep telling him that he needs to register a credit card or a bank account before he can close the account. This makes absolutely no sense.

Here's a link to one of the threads:

Very. And I've heard it causes cancer. But I can't stand a burning backside so I'll take my chances...

I'm surprised that paypaldamon hasn't jumped in to blast me.

I think PayPalDamon found that his asbestos suit wasn't enough protection. He's searching for something thicker.

He might be well advised to check out PayPal's marketing dept.- he shouldn't have any trouble finding someone to fill the bill.

Hmmm... could this be Paypal's knee-jerk reaction to a mass exodus?

When I closed my account a couple of months ago, I deleted my checking A/C, address, and everything else I could. Then pressed the "close" button. That was it.

If indeed this is a Paypal change (and not a fluke), I'd be inclined to think they came up with it to stem a rather LARGE tide of users getting out while they're ahead.

Well, if a company is planning an IPO, it might be tempted to make it as hard as possible for customers to close their accounts, so it could look as good as possible up til that time.

'We have millions of accounts!!! or is that hostages....'
