I have 4-5 fakes and that I was thinking of selling. If I state in the title that the purses are fakes is that okay or is this not legal?

When I began selling on eBay I unknowingly sold a fake thinking that it was authentic. I am sure there are probably a lot of fakes that are passed off as the real thing.

I also sold an Chanel purse that was shut down by the guys at VERO because they said I did not state the purse was an authentic Chanel (it was). Anyone know what the chances are that they will close down auctions if I state the purses are fakes?

If the purses have Dooney & Bourke on them and they are fakes, it is illegal. Even if you state that in the auction.

You cannot sell bootleg items on ebay.

Any item that you have and has a NAME BRAND name or logo on it must be an authentic to sell on ebay.

Any item that you have and has a NAME BRAND name or logo on it and is not authentic is considered a BOOTLEG product and cannot be sold on ebay.

There is one way to sell them on ebay.

If you remove ALL NAME BRAND BADGES AND LOGO'S from the purses and note in your auction something like, "Dooney & Bourke-LIKE" and "This is not an authentic Dooney & Bourke purse". You should have no problem.

I had a friend of mine who unknowingly bought a fake "...." purse at a garage sale and listed it on ebay. The next morning she had nasty email from lawyers from that company telling her to immediately cancel the auction and to send the purse to them. She cancelled the auction and she received emails from buyers for days who still wanted to buy the purse. She did return it to the "...." company in question.

and note in your auction something like, "Dooney & Bourke-LIKE" and "This is not an authentic Dooney

Using these phrases leaves you open to charges of keyword spamming, because you're selling a knockoff item by capitalizing on the reputation of the real deal. It's the same as putting "NOT Chanel" in your title/listing.

Sell 'em at your own garage sale. Our flea markets are really tough on knockoff sellers, and they'd shut you down in a heartbeat if they saw the stuff displayed on their property.

Can I ask a question about these purses. I never heard of them until getting on eBay and I have seen them fetch large sums of money. I don't know purses. Are these actually great well made purses and is that why everyone loves them, or are they actually just a fad item that people buy for the name? They look ordinary to me, but then I have been using a backpack for the past 15 years. (Old students never die, they just get gray hair.)

Does anyone know how to tell the real thing from a fake. I have heard the real ones have a serial number on the inside, but I have seen auctions stating "Authentic Dooney and Bourke" with no mention of of the number or any number in sight in the photos of the inside of purse.

Hi TammiAndy --

I sell authentic Coach bags, and don't like to publish the serial numbers in my auctions as there are people selling fakes who will use those serial numbers, harvested from a seller offering genuine bags, in their ads. Especially at this time of year...fakes are rampant.

I will give them out in email, though only if I'm emailed by someone with a registered user id.

Hi cmbt --

I don't know how Dooney operates, but if they are anything like Coach, they will shut down the auction if you use their name and the word fake together.

I had a similar experience, also...I bought a Louis Vuitton purse at a thrift store, which I believed to be authentic. ( I still think it was authentic, actually.) But, being an honest seller, I stated in my description that I could not absolutely verify authenticity. I got a scary email from LV's lawyers, and eBay ended my auction. I don't even know how they could tell that it wasn't authentic without actually examining the purse in person, but I guess my statement was enough for them to shut it down. As it turns out, I just resold it on my garage sale for about what I paid for it. Oh, well...live and learn!

How can you tell that these purses are fake?

I would like to know what to look for.

I own two real Dooney & Bourke that are older. They neither one have a serial number inside. They were purchased directly from D & B catalog. You can tell by the quality of the stitching and the feel of the bag. The leather is very supple, not stiff and scratchy like the fakes I have seen. The stitching is very clean and even. I have sold one fake on ebay and stated that it was definitely not authentic in the description. Also emailed high bidder at the end to make sure they realized this. She was tickled to death with the bag. I was actually sorry I sold it. Really nice bag.

I did notice on ebay when selling mine. If the word faux was in the description, the auction was stopped. If there was only a ? behind the Dooney & Bourke name in the description, the sale was not stopped. Go figure.
