Yes. These annoying web sites use JavaScript like so many other, usefull web sites do. In both IE and Netscape, you have to go into your web browser's Preferences and temporarily turn off JavaScript.

In IE: View/Internet Options/Security tab/Settings/Scripting/select DISABLE. Click OK to get back out and then close those windows.

Remember to turn your JavaScript back on afterwards.

In Netscape: Edit/Preferences/Advanced unclick JavaScript.

It is unfortunate that there is no law against this sort of attack. While "hacking" to shut down your computer is illegal, using this method to punish you by crashing your computer for not buying their trash is perfectly legal.

Many online auctions use JavaScript to do fancy functions, even though it slows down loading time a lot.

Edited because I accidently submitted too soon. [ edited by Borillar on Nov 24, 2000 03:11 PM ]

Thanks - Borillar I can write a little HTML but I don't know anything about writing Java.
It was a little different in my Netscape but I disabled it and it will be interesting to see if it effects much browsing regular pages. I'll probably have to turn it on again.
I thought some of the banner ads were pushy but that is crazy. If they think that makes anyone want to buy anything they really need some marketing help.

I hate them URLs that cause all the windows to popup run across this doing a search on yahoo and stuff unrelated site looks like what you need I have learned never close the browser always back out you get less new browsers opening .

Here is a tip next time this happens just do a three finger salute <alt> <control> <delete> once up comes the program man Hold down the shift key Hilite all open browsers and shut all down at the same time.

If your fast enough you wont crash one more tip alway go to system tools an run a clean drive includeing temp files before restarting your browser and try to avoid a restart before you clean these file some websites programed with active x can hold viruses and trojans that arent active untill reboot if they are deleted before reboot they never get started .

yikes. Thanks for posting, you guys. That could easily happen to me- I search for Barbie dolls all the time and occasionally run across mis-listed porno junk (Barbie Benton, the Barbie twins...yadda yadda yadda) It annoys me to no end. I have taken to "safe harboring" all of them if I have a spare minute to do it because I know that even though kids aren't supposed to use Ebay they do, and lots of them could logically be looking for Barbies.

But what a nightmare if some poor little kid had that same thing happen- windows out the yingyang & a crashed computer! It would SUCK! And then to get busted by the parents for looking up porno sites! LOL!

I hate that. The worst thing is when you close all of those extra windows and click the back button on your browser you will not be able to exit the site and all of those windows will open again.

The latest "Big" thing with porno sites on eBay is this:

They say something like "Successful website for sale"

Then, when you clic on the auction, it has a micro-short description, with pictures with those little fuzzy spots strategically placed, and links to "examine" their website before you bid on it.

I have seen no less then 10 of these already, just in the last two weeks.

They use many different titles, and post in many different catagories.

Thing is, the reserve is "never" met.

Cheap advertising to millions, and your wife won't even know. She'll just think that your looking for a "Make 1 zillion dollars on ebay, I did" CD...

BTW: pocono don't like porno sites..
Actually, he think's they "suck"...er, make that "stink"

.

Oh no, I hope eBay is not going to become a porn pain-in-the-a** like AOL did. I had to leave AOL because of all the disgusting porn spam and instant message harrassment.

There is nothing that can be done on eBay for the problem that you describe macandjan? I thought you could report them and get rid of the auction for java scripts.

The JavaScript command to open up all of those pages when you try to leave is OnUnload. I can't see why web browser manufacturers; e.g. Microsoft (who owns a *HUGE* stake in AOL, who in turn bought out Netscape's browser division during the Microsoft anti-trust trial), just do not provide a button in the browser window that tells the browser to ignore the OnUnload command. This is so simple a fix it isn't funny.

There are lots of legitimate commercial uses for the OnUnload command; such as, Shopping Cart web services and other user-acknoledged information gathers. That is why having the OnUnload as a Preference/Option that you have to dig through screen after screen in your browser to get to is completely absurd. Just a simple On/Off button on the browser window would do just fine.

Learned a lot thanks. I will have to go see about eBays policy on Java that's something I know nothing about. That is sneaky about the "business for sale" lead in. That could be used for banned items and I am not sure it would be something they could stop if it were two links removed.

Like others said, I just don't GET why they do this. All it does is p*ss people off; even if I had money to burn on porn pay sites I would NEVER EVER give these buttheads my money after dealing with a 1000 pop-ups like that!!! Stupid stupid stupid. And besides, even if you wanted to sign up for their pay site with the "real Pamela and Tommy video" <rolleyes>, chances are you couldn't work your way to the signup page anyway, due to all the popups!

I think Pop-ups are the spawn of Satan. Really. I don't bother complaining about the porn ones (because they dont' care!!) but I will unleash my full fury on ANY "mainstream" site that uses Pop-ups. JobsOnline is one major offender. Everytime I turn around I am getting a JobsOnline popup for visiting some totally unrelated site.. lately they've been popping up due to HTML enabled spammy email! I hate that!!!

BlackCoffeeBlues: If you are using IE, there is supposed to be a way to reject anything with HTML in it. I can't find the one for Netscape and it may not have it. Concidering Microsoft owns Netscape browser thrugh their ownership of AOL, I don't see why such a feature woudn't be available eventually.

Do what I do ... send the auction to a friend, with the friend being [email protected] and complain about the popup links and browser-jacking that kept sending you to porn sites. Seller will be NARU real fast.

They were using sctipt commands to keep the windows popping upm and probably had some script in there to make it look like they were being clicked on.

If you know how, notify the site they were advertising too, because most of them wikll cancel their "associate" and not send them any money because they were using fraudulent means to inflate their referral income.

I use "The Proximitron", which kills popups and disables individual commands if I want ... and "OnUnload" is tops on my list.
