I listed an item and upon closer examination when another potential bidder emailed asking questions I noticed a large crack! I can't believe I missed it. I told the emailer and immediately emailed the high bidder. I told them I assumed they would want to cancel their bid, but after the fact I'm wondering if it would be better if I canceled their bid and then closed the auction. If they cancel their bid it will show up for the next 6 months in their feedback file, to no fault of their own. If I cancel their bid, does it still show up in the feedback profile? Thanx, I've never ever had to deal with this problem before!

In this case I believe the seller should cancel all bids and end the auction early. I don't believe this counts against the bidder.

I agree with Meya, and it won't go on the bidders record as a retraction. If they still want to buy it for a lower amount, then that will be up to them.

Hey, thanx for the quick response! I've canceled the high bidder's bid and closed the auction. I sure hope they aren't too upset with us, but I explained that if they retracted it would look like a strike in their feedback profile.

Hello Angela,
I think you handled this properly.
Cancellations by the seller do not show up anywhere other than the auction's bidding history.
Retractions by the bidder show up in the bidder's feedback summary and there is no way to distinguish between a valid retraction (such as a change to the auction description) and an invalid retraction ("I got it cheaper elsewhere".

I would have done the same. Just remember, you should cancel ALL bids before ending the auction, so you will not have a new high bidder.
