How many days - weeks - months should a bidder have to wait before saying "to heck with it" and move on? and what is the proper course of action afterwards?

I dont have time to chase after this seller. Its been a five days (not a long time) but long enough for a buyer to get bored of the whole thing. I dont have their address, shipping costs for the two items I purchased or even an acknowledgement that the auctions ended.

The seller also had quite strict restrictions on payment time - 10 days.

About the same time that seller should have to wait for a deadbeat bidder to pay up.

Buyers and sellers by Ebay rules should contact each other within 3 days after the end of auction.

since its been 5 days why not send safe habor a email stateing your case with the seller ID and Item number.

or better yet go to ebay and request information on the seller name address and phone number and call then about 2 in the morning to see what the deal is

It's possible that the seller has sent email and you haven't received it. That doesn't happen frequently, but it does happen, and it has happened to me before as a seller. Luckily I had an extremely patient buyer who really wanted the item and wrote to me multiple times until I figured out that my messages weren't going through.

If you've sent the seller email and you aren't getting a response, use an alternate email address in case your messages aren't going through (or use the "Email this item to a friend" option on the listing page) and make sure he knows that you haven't received his end of auction notification and are concerned that it's floating around somewhere out in the ether.

What's the seller's feedback like? It's possible something happened, or maybe he's just a lazy schlub who doesn't care about his sales, though that seems unlikely.

I mostly sell on ebay and try to get the EOA invoices out in a timely manner, but a few weeks ago, I was surprised to get a post from a buyer asking for the shipping costs on one of my auctions.....since I had invoiced off of the my ebay page I went back to check and did not even have it on there. After further checking by doing a seller search on myself I found that it did indeed sell and that for some reason was not listed on my ebay...grrrr. I used to make out a paper invoice for every listed thing but it wasted so much paper for non sales that I had gone to this new system. The point of this rather rambling post is that sometimes there is a reason. Not everytime but sometimes. If that buyer had not emailed me I would have never known. Another time, I had a major computer crash with 47 active auctions about to close. I had to go to a friends to get the invoices out. It caused a delay and my system was out for two weeks. Try a few more times just in case there is a legitimate reason....

I don't know too many sellers that go through the time and effort and cost of listing an auction, because thay DON'T want to sell their items.

Thank you for all your replies. I have considered the email to nowhere syndrome and have emailed a few times "I did not receive..." using eBay and different email accounts...

I am patient, I know people are busy and that technology sometimes gets in the way of communication. Its just getting old.

P.s.

And I do think a seller can regret a lousy dollar sale and even ~ although very rarely ~ back out.

genie9:

I agree.

I would suggest as always, to utilize the feedback system, and bang him with an honest description of your complaint.

Feedback is the toughie. If I neg them, I have little doubt that they will neg me twice and wreck my clean seller profile ~ the one I worked hard for and that is finally paying for itself in higher and higher bidding activity and prices.

If I don't neg them first (at least for now) I maintain a bit of leverage. Maybe the feedback factor will eat away at their conscience and fear will invade their dreams...

I've had the reverse problem. I've had bidders BLOCK my incoming email messages so they could claim nothing got to them. I've sent no telling how many emails from two different sites this month to avoid this. Some bidders only answer AFTER they get a NPB alert. A few don't even then. The bulk do answer, but it's always a handful of trouble makers that delay. In one case this month it's causing a suspension. Some act all bent out of shape when you do contact, after weeks of ignoring email.

I've had it happen to me where I send a conformation note out and winners never receive them.
I have since put it in my auction listings that if a conformation isn't received within a day to email me..
Don't understand why the notes weren't received. I sure would hate to get a neg for that reason, especially when the email was sent out in a timely matter.
I do know that some winners never email you, they just send the payment in the mail.
