I just had an auction end satisfactory, I sent out my usual EOA notice. Then I get an e-mail from someone claiming to be a co-worker of the auction winner telling me that the winner just had a heart attack and is on their way to the hospital for heart surgery, and would I offer the item to the backup bidder. I sent a e-mail telling them how sorry I was to hear that and I would do what she asked. The backup bidder declined the offer to purchase the item. I then check and hours after I get her e-mail, she is still bidding on the same type of item I was selling. She even won the bid on one of the other items 5 hours after she supposedly had her heart attack. I e-mail her back and ask her whats going on and tell her that if she can still bid on other items, then she should be able to complete our transaction or I would leave appropiate feedback. I then get a e-mail supposedly from the co-worker telling me to do what I want because the bidder has died. I don't want to be disrespectful if she did have a heart attack but I think she is just making excuses. I was just wondering if I handled this appropriatly and what you would do in this situation.

You did the right thing--you've got the goods on her, as you've seen that she's still bidding. You can't force her to buy the item, so file the NPB alert, relist the item and file for FVF credit when the time comes. Tag her with negative feedback for non-payment, and be sure to mention the fact that she was unable to pay because she passed on. I doubt negative feedback will worry her much, where she is now, and she isn't going to be able to retaliate .
I'd love to see the response to your negative....

There is only one thing you are all forgetting...proxy bidding. It is quite possible (although not necessarily probable) that the bidder in question had set up proxy bids on those other auctions. I would take my time and monitor the activity of the bidder. Watch for feedback being placed on items closed within the last few days. If they are paying for items, you know you are being scammed. However, if in about 2 weeks, the feedback dries up, you know no new payments are being sent out and perhaps it is true. You do have 45 days to deal with the issue before you are stuck with the fees. I know all about being scammed, but I'd hate to be wrong on this one. Good luck!

Also ... they can have as many as 10 days worth of auctions set up at esnipe.
if the bids are single ones, placed right at the end of the auctions, it's probably not being donw n person.

I was wondering about the proxy bidding thing too, I don't know how that works. I just thought it was odd that while she was having a heart attack she had enough presence of mind to ask someone to e-mail me about her bids. I just hope that I was'nt jumping too fast about to doubt her story.

the bids wer'nt single ones for the other item, there was some sniping going on and she bid about 2 times near the end of the auction.

Sounds like a flubber, but I had a REAL eye opening experience in the past with a similar situation.
Long story, but I would be real sure before you make yourself feel really bad.
I joke around a lot on these boards, but this time, I am very serious.

I would request the users contact information and give her a call. Cadavers don't usually have too much to say. Tim

I did pull the contact info, it seems that she gave a fake phone # as all I got was a recording that there is no such #. I was just wondering if I would be out of line sending an e-mail to the other seller that she won the bid on and seeing if they got the same story or if she just wanted their item instead of mine. I am really feeling bad about this.

A couple of options:
Neutral Feedback: (my choice)
I was sorry to hear of your death, my condolences to the family.
Negative Feedback: (I would not do this)
I was told you were dead, why are you still bidding?
or
She puts the Dead in Deadbeat.
or
You can't take it with you, so pay me.

louber, I would be very suspicious just because of wrong details in the medical story, but I worked Cardiac for 3 years.

Dead people can vote, why not bid?
If the contact info is invalid, contact eBay with the particulars. That is a no-no.

I had a newbie bidder once, never answered emails, never paid. I went thru the whole NPB & FVF & Neg shebang. A few months later the daughter sent me a MO, and a note saying indeed the bidder did die. The daughter was clearing up her mother's affairs on eBay. The item was already relisted and sold, so I just returned the MO with a really nice condolences note.
Can't speel berfoe cofee.

I am very understanding (gullible?) when it comes to buyers' excuses, but come on...
This person's friend is supposedly on the way to the hospital and they are concerned with contacting people about Ebay auctions??
Also, with the new bid history page, I believe you can tell what time the bid was actually placed. This might help uncover the truth here.

Why don't you contact the other sellers to see if they received the same email? If not, then I'd say you were scammed. All you can do is leave appropriate feedback (I'd definitely mention how this person was "dead" in the feedback) and file your FVF's. Good luck!

File the NPB and FVF request, relist the item, move on.
In a short while it will make a good "story" to entertain your friends with.

According to the Tibetan Book Of The Dead, the deceased may not even realize he/she has died and continues about their daily affairs. I can't think of a corollary in Christian theology other than the bit about buying and selling in the end of days.
That's probably what happened here.
I would leave appropriate feedback, but exclude any jokes about the "thrill" of snipe bidding.

hey don't ask me. I just got booted (with no notice, no warning!) from bidbay just because I asked a
question about this link.
http://sites.state.pa.us/PA_Exec/Securities/actions/bidbay.html
I guess they don't want their blessed members to know they were issued a C & D Order and therefore
their stock can never go public. I have the thread, I got it before they zapped it. Email me at
[email protected] if you want it. I was told to "let it go!". Sounds like a cover up.
What a joke that site is. I will take ebay ANYDAY!!!!!!

Definitely Neg and file a NPB. It can't hurt them if they're really dead...which I find hard to believe. If she was bidding on other items, I might buy the proxy bid thing, but the fact that she's bidding on the same items makes it looks like she's looking for the best deal.
I personally LOVE honestjonstoys suggestion of "She puts the Dead in Deadbeat".
Good luck!
