I have a zoom+macro lens 35-140 mm with a cokinlight 62mm filter on it. What is this lens and filter intended for? Will it take close pictures (5" from lens)? Thanks!

What you need to do is find what kind of camera it will go on. Post a picture of the rear of the lens and maybe someone can identify it. It will take pictures from far away, and maybe as close as 5 inches from the front of the lens.

sg52 -- it goes on a Nikon FG body. In fact it's on that camera now. I have never taken pictures with it. A potential bidder is asking me this question of 5" close ups.

Focus and zoom the lens as far "out" as it will go. Both focus and zoom.

Look through the camera.

See how close it will focus.

Zoom the lens as short as it will go,
but leave the focus "long". See how
close that focuses. You can do these tests with the camera sitting on a table focusing on a cardboard box.

What brand is it?

The name on the lens is Soligor. The filter on the end says Cokinlight 62mm Skylight.
If the camerea isn't of the 'point and shoot' species I am completely lost...

I have 2 lenses for my Pentax K1000 that both claim to be "macro". One is a Samyang 80-200mm zoom, but the objects still have to be some distance away. The other is a Takumar 35-80mm zoom, and it will allow me to get within a couple of inches of the subject. When I put the Takumar into macro mode, there is a noticable change: the front lens is pushed out an inch or so.

True "macro" lenses, those that allow you to get within inches of a subject, act like that Takumar lens, at least in my experience.

The "skylight" filter cuts down on the UV light which reduces the blueish tint that some photographers consider a flaw. It is not part of the lens, it was added.

zoom+macro lens 35-140 mm ... it's a good utility lens, with a moderately wide angle at it's widest and a moderate zoom lens at its zoomiest. These are good for "event shooting" where you might want to shoot a view of a group of performers and then zoom onto a detail without changing lenses.

Its value depends on the reputation of the maker ... Soligor is one I am not familiar with.

To test the macro part, turn the focus ring until the indicator shows you are in the "macro" area and take the lens cap off. Set up a variety of small objects on your desktop, at distances varying from 1 to 10 inches from the edge and see which ones you can focus on the most clearly. A 35-140 mm should be able to fill the viewfinder with something an inch tall.

Soligor is not a valuable secondary or 3rd. tier brand lens. Forget the filter-it has nothing to do with the question being asked.
You might want to search on ebay for the identical lens (present or past) and read a few descriptions to see if another seller mentions it.

Soligor was a "renaming importer" which was active from the mid '60s to late '70s, declined rapidly into the '80s, and survives curiously as a brand on a single product today, a somewhat sophisticated light meter.

This lens is not itself of any important value, but it's a nice addition to the FG.

Soligor offered some good glass. Zooms being what they are, compromise optical performance to make for easier use. Sounds like you have a nice combo for an amateur who just wants to take decent pix without a lot of stuff.

Anyone care to venture what it's value is? Or how about a jumping off point? I currently have it listed w/ opening bid of 50.00 NR. Is this out of line?
