I have been asked twice from different
publishers, if they could use my (different)Ebay auction photographs for 1) an online collectables publication and 2)a book on certain collectables...they said they would put my name under the photo.
WOW- I was flattered and said sure, why not- but wonder if any of YOU have had this happen. Some of my photos are pretty good- not all of them: Is something going on I'm too naive to realize here? Surely, I am not the only one!!! Would appreciate any input.

I too have been asked by publishers and web sites if they can use my photos. I too have given permission and they all have my name under all the photos I have let them use.
I sell alot of collectibles and I usually get these request from old obscure stuff I sell. I don't think its a scam, but I don't see how it could be. I usually get a free copy of what ever book it is they are going to use my photo for. I don't mind.

That's nice- they sent you a book- Did you sign anything or just email your permission?
It is nice that they asked anyway- just that in itself is nice. Just wonder if this is a common thing on Ebay~~

I didnt have to sign anything, I simply replied giving them permission.
I am sure they have to ask. If I saw a picture of mine in a book and I did not give permission I would sue in a NY minute !!
I am not a professional photographer, but since I have been on ebay I have taken 10's of thousands of pictures and I have gotten quite good (if I do say so myself). Having people ask to use my pictures flatters me more than anything and lets me know I am getting better at taking them.
As far as a common thing, I get requests like these about once every 2 months.

CIX- That is GREAT! It is encouraging to think someone appreciates your work...other than the norm.

Yup...had a publisher/writer ask for my permission on a pic of an old GE radio..was given credit in the book for the pic.

I have asked sellers if I could use their photos. But I always send a permission form and ask that the person send it back with a few lines saying it is OK.
We used to have to do this by snail mail but electronic signatures are OK now.
I have had people ask me to use my photos too. I have no problem with it unless it is an item I am selling. Then I tell the person who wants the permission that if the item is sold they will have to ask the new owner for permission. I always ask the buyer, (if there is a buyer), if it is OK to send their email address to the person who wants the permission. So far no one has refused.

This surprises me, because most book publishers require very fine resolution scans for their published photographs. Most eBay JPGs should weigh around 15 - 30 kilobytes for fast loading, while a publication-quality scan of the same dimensions will be around 50 MEGAbytes.
Are they asking for additional files, or simply right-clicking the eBay picture and downloading it?

Not a publisher, but an author ask me once. He finally came to the conclusion that he couldn't use the photo, and that was the end of that.

A publisher should be paying for your images. Of the top, I don't know the current rates for such use, but I would guess it would be at least $50.00 (it depends on the market and the number of pictures)

smw,
I am talking about publishers and websites, etc..
I will not let another user use my pictures. HELL NO !!!
That is not fair to the potential buyers of the users item. They will see my item and then recieve something similar, but not the exact same.
If a user asks to use my pictures to sell an item of theirs I DO NOT ALLOW THAT !!!!
If a user steals my pics to use on their auctions, I will do everything possible to get that user suspended !

Hey Cix- We are missing the boat! $50.00 a shot- would be VERY nice! My Ebay photos have all been under 15 kilobytes- and actually, taken with fine resolution, but cut down to 360x 480 jpegs...and then whatever happens when AW puts them on. That isn't much for a publisher to use... and NO- they have never asked for more resolution- from me, anyway. They are just right clicker- downloaders.
Next time, I will ask more questions.
