Title says it all.

I bidded regularly. I never wanted to use the BIN option, and wanted someone else to fight it out with me. Nothing happened after the confirmation.

An hour later, I get a notice from eBay saying I won the item with BIN!!

I checked the auction, and sure enough, I won the item!! No one bidded aganst me!!

WTF is going on??

Was the BIN price the same as the auction starting price?

There was a $15.00 difference from the starting price and the BIN.

Did you bid a proxy that was at least the BIN amount or more?

Yes. About $5 more.

That's how a BIN auction works... if you bid (or proxy) at least the BIN amount, the item is yours at that price.

But waitaminute, aren't you suppose to have on file a Credit Card for the BIN?

Hello Silver,

Sounds as though you thought you were placing a normal bid but somehow clicked on the BIN button somewhere along the line.

Or more likely (as I know you are not inexperienced when it comes to auctions)...

eBay built logic into auctions with BIN to assume that a regular proxy bid equal to or higher than the BIN price was the equivalent to a BIN bid.

After all, if you wanted to try for the item in a regular auction bidding format it is presumed that you are hoping to win the item at less than the BIN price.

Have you emailed eBay to ask for a clarification?

Oh that's a bummer!
Your proxy can BIN??!?!?!?
So far all I have done is placed marker bids at minimum bid.
brrrr...the though of accidentally buying something means I will wait and snipe or live without!

Maybe I'm wrong... I know that's how it works on Yahoo, but maybe it's different on eBay? I've run auctions using BIN but never bought one, and I assumed that's the way it works. If not, someone please correct me!

*hits head on the desk*

GAH!! And eBay didn't spend the money somewhere else, rather on this piece of #*!@?!?!

codasaurus: I've been on eBay for more than 2 years, off and on, and BIN is new to me, so please don't rub it in.

My understanding was that if you entered a bid and clicked bid now that is was supposed to become a regular auction and Buy It Now was supposed to disappear, even if your proxy was the same or higher than the BIN. At least that was how the help pages described it. Are you sure you didn't enter the proxy and then click on Buy It Now instead of place bid? The button arrangements on the page aren't the best I've seen and I think it could be easy to get confused.

If I remember correctly, you need to click on the BIN link in the grey box to activate the BIN.

Silver (sorry but I prefer this misspelling of your userid),

BIN is new to all of us. Have you asked eBay yet if it was possible that your regular bid was changed to a BIN bid because your proxy met/exceeded reserve?

I'm confused. Why would anyone bid higher than the BIN but not want to win at the BIN price? I understand that humans are quirky creatures, but this defies all logic. If you were willing to "fight it out" at higher than BIN, you should be happy to be declared the winner at the lower price.

Valeriet

If you put the proxy out, it should mean that you will go that high, but you want it cheaper if you can. If the low bidding price is less than the BIN price, and the item never gets another bid, then Silver has been obligated for more than she should have been.

If nothing else, I would complain to the seller.

Actually, I rechecked on the value of the item, and right now, it's worth $30 more than what I paid for it!!

This fiasco has turned to the better.
