I just sold several items to a buyer in Japan. The only international payments I've gotten so far were from Canada and Austrailia (in both cases my buyers usually just send cash).
I am uncomfortable with the idea of they buyer sending this much cash through the mail (it's about $150). Are there any good options out there for international payments that don't cost an arm and a leg?
Oh, one more related question. I have this vague recollection that some forms of payment might result in banking fees when I deposit them. Anyone happen to know?

Request they pay by International Postal Money Order. You then cash this at the post office at no cost. If you cash it your bank they will charge you a fee. I've done several like this with no trouble.

...and if International Postal Money Order, make sure it is in US funds. I never was charged by my bank when depositing them....
Some Japanese buyers send BIG BUCKS in cash, by EXPRESS MAIL...Had it happen a few times...Don't you just love it...?
They may ask that you write "Gift" on the custom papers..DON'T...Not worth getting into trouble over.

We've been paid twice with Japanese postal money orders and haven't been charged any fees by our bank.

USPS has agreements with some country's postal services re money orders. Japan IS one of them. Can cash them right at your post office! Worked great for me .. was over $1000 transaction.
I have a memory like a steel trap .. unfortunately it's rusted shut!

ditto what tuition said---and also your Japanese customer can go to their post office and pay for the money order and the Janpanese post office will arrange for a USA postal money order to be mailed to you from the states.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. It sounds like an International Postal money order might be the best way.
Zazzie: getting them to have the money order mailed from the states is great! I think I will try that one.
Shoshanah: I've dealt with lots of Canadians; so far none has asked me to lie on the form. I can't imagine being willing to risk the penalties, especially for some stranger's benefit....but I've heard it happens.
Thanks for all the help!

I sold an old Mac to this collector in Japan. He paid 500 dollars with Bidpay.com money order and the balance with an international money order. I usually request one that is US funds and yes the Post Office cashes them no problem. Everytime anybody asks to check the gift section on the customs form I tell them that my lawyers told me not to. Be sure to use the big customes (white) form and do not check "Abandon"
Sometimes that means "take me" to some less than honest postal workers inoher countries (although I was told that Japan, Canada, and Australia were very good about stuff like that). If it goes surface it can take 3 months to get there too!
Good luck

I'm not sure I would want a $150 Amazon.com gift certificate as payment, but I still offer that for my International payments. There are no transaction fees to worry about and I'm always buying stuff from them anyway.
