I know there is a post about this but for the life of me I cannot find it.
I need opinions on digital cameras.
Dh has given me the A-OK for a new digital camera fro myself for Christmas.so, I need opinions preferably under 500.00 with zoom. I have been seesawing between a Sony Mavica and an Olympus. Only difference is the Mavica uses floppies and that seems like a +to me. If anyone has any insight as to a good comparable camera that they prefer please post her.

We have an Olympus, and it has the disks as well (but you might have to buy them separately. The camera is great, good quality pics. I think ours is the D400 or something like that (it's dh's thang

Note about ZOOM: remember, OPTICAL zoom is far superior to DIGITAL zoom!
I have an Epson 850 & it takes magnificant high-resolution pics which can be printed at least to 8.5X11. I had previously owned a cheaper Kodak -- ya gets what ya pays for!

I bought the Sony Mavica about a month ago and have loved it. The floppys are great and it is so easy to use, and my pictures come out great.

I bought an Olympus Camedia D-360L earlier this year and am very pleased with it. ($300.00 at Wal-Mart) I don't list very much, so I don't mind messing with the cords. But if you plan on using it a lot, I would invest in one that uses floppies.

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to post pictures to an auction, then Mavica is fine. If you want to take family shots, you have to consider this:
a high resolution photo takes about a meg of space. a floppy disk is about a meg of space. so how does the Mavica get several photos on to one floppy? The answer is very high compression and as you must realize, compression reduces the quality of the photo. So the little 2 inch by 3 inch auction shots might look great, but try printing some 4 X 6 or 5 X 7 family shots from a Mavica and compare them to any megapixel camera and you will easily see the difference.
The best bang for the buck in the 2 megapixel range is the Toshiba PDR-M5. It has won all sorts of awards, including first place in the Digital Imaging Media Association's shootout against 40 other cameras. For more info, you can email me or just visit my site where I have sample photos and links to reviews. As for the convenience of floppies, I can plug my M5 into the cable connected to my USB port and download the 33 high resolution images on the smartmedia in a minute. I don't see how using a floppy is any more convenient. Cheaper maybe. More prone to sectors errors than smartmedia definitely. Slower than smartmedia definitely. Lower quality photos definitely. But not more convenient.

I use the Mavica at work and own an Olympus D460Z, with the use of a USB smart reader with the Olympus, speed is the same. But the pictures are better quality with the Olympus. And can get more pictures on the smart media cards.
