Hi. I received a check back for nonsufficient funds from my bank. It is for an item I sold on Nov. 13th. I received the payment promptly from the buyer. I wrote him and have received an answer that his bank had been taken over and they lost his account for a few days. He said I could redeposit it and his bank would pay all the charges. Since it is the weekend I couldn't contact my bank but thought you'all might shed some light on whether you think that sounds right and if redepositing is the way to go? Can my bank call his bank to put a hold on the amount? What if it bounces again? I don't want to be unreasonable but I don't want to be dealing with this forever. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Call his bank first. I have NEVER had a bank automatically cover any charges. And, I doubt his account was lost. But, to give him the benefit of the doubt, call the bank, and say you want to verify funds on a check. Most banks will do this without a problem. Also, ask if it will be a problem re-depositing a check. Sometimes, if it has already been run through twice, you can
t do it again.
If you can re-deposit, and all is well, he STILL has to pay your fees out of his pocket. Good luck!!

My bank did do this once. They too had merged with another bank. They did cover all charges, but it took a while to get it straightened out. You definitely want to check it out with his bank first.

Thought I would update you on this situation. I went to the bank this morning and was informed that they had already put the check through twice. Said they always do that before returning it. A very nice lady called the other bank and there were still no funds in the account. Her advice to me was to go to the police dept. and fill out a form to be sent to the buyers police dept. in his town. Haven't done that yet so I don't know what the police on the other end do. I am a little uncomfortable with this - what do you guys think? I wrote the buyer and asked for a money order or cashiers check ASAP. Told him what I was advised to do at the bank. Maybe that will move him to respond immediately. I am really upset the guy lied to me about the check and the bank.
