I won an item and only money orders and cashiers checks are accepted. This irritates me to begin with but then it says that no green domestic mo will be accepted. Does the post office sell other kinds or will I have to go somewhere else for one? I usually don't buy anything if checks arent accepted but I wanted this for a gift.

I believe the seller is asking for a US POSTAL MONEY ORDER, from Post Office as opposed to a non-brand MO. like from a corner store or Kmart...

The post office sells pretty pink ones that are for International use----the green ones say on the bottom "For USA and Protectorates Only" ---many Canadian banks until very recently would cash the green ones---but they had been used for laundering money and the Canadian Banks refuse them now.
But they are more expensive and it would be cheaper for you to get one at a local drug store or grocery store if they sell them.
If I'm looking at the correct auction---the seller takes Billpoint

My bank still accepts green US money orders. I thought it wasn't until sometime next year that they would have to stop taking them. I din't realize until lately that there were so many 'generic' type money orders that cost very little. Are they OK to accept?

Thanks everyone. Just out of curiosity why are the pink international ones from the post office more money?
Zazzie - You probably are looking at the correct one. I hadn't heard about the problem in Canada with the mos. Is that true in other countries as well?

My local branch of the BOM started refusing the Green USPS MO's several weeks back after the USPS made a big stink about the money laundering B.S.
Think Pink!

You'll have to ask your PO why they cost more---must have to do with them being cashed outside of the USA---anyone got the link for that article about the cashing of green MO's.
I think Canada's bank were the only international ones that cashed the green ones---I guess our proximity allowed for some bending of the rules by the banks

I get all kinds of money orders - Postal, Credit Union, WalMart, Western Union, 7-11, Gas Station minimart. My bank takes everything. I got one the other day that was HUGE, twice the size of a regular check.
For Canadians though, it has to be International Postal. I cash them at my Post Office, and for some reason, they always wince when I present them, but they cash them. I tried to cash one at my bank, and no one there knew if there would be a charge, I decided not to risk it.

It is unfortunate that the USPS charges such an outrageous fee for Pink money orders when the green ones are so cheap.
The following is the letter I use when I get a green USPS MO.
Your postal money order arrived today. Unfortunately your post office sold you a GREEN DOMESTIC postal money order which states in bold red type "NEGOTIABLE ONLY IN US AND POSSESSIONS". As you know Canada is not part of the US.
Your post office should have sold you a Pink International Money Order. Canadian banks used to be more than willing to cash these domestic MO's (in spite of the geographical limitation printed on them) and then process them through their affiliate banks in the US.
However the United States Postal Service has put a complete and total stop to this practice. The USPS has effectively turned these money orders into totally worthless pieces of paper outside of the US. For your information, the USPS appears to be the only organization anywhere in the world that places geographical limits where their MO's can be cashed.
Unfortunately I have to return this MO to you in today's mail. I can accept US PINK INTERNATIONAL Postal Money Orders or money orders from banks, American Express or Western Union. You can also pay me using your credit card via billpoint. Or you can send me your personal check.
Sorry for the confusion. If you have trouble explaining the problem to your local post office, feel free to show them a copy of this email.
Thanks
Bill

Thanks Bill, no need to even edit that. With any luck, I won't have to use it any time soon.

reddeer,
I hope I don't need it to often either. My TOS and EAO both clearly set out a variety of payments that I can accept and the one (green domestic postal MO's) that I absolutely can't.
