I'm about to ship a cookie jar and lid, auction closes in a few days. Is there one very best way to do this? I'm already thinking of a box within a box for the cookie jar. Whatchoo think?

a piece of styrofoam before the bubble wrap on the lid will allow you to pack them together without them bumping together and breaking...you can get panels of the stuff from home improvement stores, they're used for insulating under panelling...5 sheets for 4 bucks...

I just shipped a cookie jar and lid and I used a priority mail box cushioned with balled up newspaper and triple-wrapped both pieces with paper as well. I think they'll arrive fine. Box w/in a box isn't a bad idea either, I guess, but the weight might increase and thereby increase your postage. Your call.

I've shipped numerous CJ's, some in the $400-500 range.

Use LARGE 3/4 inch bubble wrap, pack each piece in a seperate box, then both into a larger box. Make sure there's at least 2 inches of scrunched up newspaper packing surrounding the innner boxes on all 4 sides, with 3-4 inches on the bottom. If you feel confident that you can drop the box from 5 ft high, on to a concrete surface below, it's ready to ship.

Whew, REDDEER! I'd buy stuff from you ANYTIME! That is SERIOUS packing.

Wanna send my seller tips on packing? LOL!

Consider what causes breakage in shipping, prevent it, and you've solved the problem. First would obviously be the lid and jar banging together. Wrap the lid so that there are 2-3 layers of bubble wrap on the surface that will be up against the jar (sometimes it works best to invert the lid, especially if there's a knob or handle on top). Then wrap the jar, making sure that there are a couple more layers at the point where it will contact the lid. Place the lid on the jar and tape the two together VERY FIRMLY, so that there is no movement, taking a couple of strips completely around the bundle. You can add another couple of layers of bubble wrap at this point, if you like, but it isn't necessary if your box allows 2-3" of packing peanuts on all sides of the box. The next source of breakage would be the jar slamming against the floor as the box is dropped. Be sure to use an oversized box that is 2-3" larger in every direction than the wrapped jar. Add a layer of packing peanuts, then the jar, then finish filling the box with peanuts. Use enough peanuts that you can shake the box and hear no movement when it's closed.

I'd absolutely stay away from using paper (even shredded) for cushioning an object as large and heavy as a cookie jar. It just doesn't have the necessary shock absorption properties.

Ooops, I forgot to mention, make sure to use lots of clear packing tape. Make sure the bottom of the box is completley covered, and give all 4 sides have a few wraps, it makes the box much stronger & helps prevent rips, tears, etc.

I've shipped over 1000 items with newspaper packing, many of them VERY fragile, and never had an item get broken.

Be sure to fill up the jar with paper or foam peanuts. Never ship a large hollow item empty....
