I just received an email from ebay which says they have changed one of my items categories because they felt it was put in the wrong place. I had the item listed in 2 categories which they changed both categories to the same one. This will surely cost me $$$. The thing that pisses me off the most is in their email is this line"If this occurs again, we will end the auctions early and you run the
risk of account suspension. We value your membership and request that
you be careful when placing items".
That is BS. In about a year and a half I haven't had any real problems with ebay and now I get this threat for something I was totally unaware of.
eeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
just had to scream!!!!

Can I ask what type of item you were selling and what category you had it in? As a buyer when I see something in a category that's totally unrelated I have to say, it's very irritating. But that's JMO.

It was a sterling cross. I had it in religious and under sterling jewlery. I'll admit maybe it was not in the right religious category---but it is sterling. They moved it out of sterling jewelry and put it in the same religious category.
Just ridiculous.

I've seen abuses on both sides, both by eBay and individual sellers. A friend of mine, a three year Powerseller with 3000+ feedback, just got off a one-week suspension for listing in the wrong category. There was no doubt her items were unrelated to the category; she was flaunting eBay's rules. However, I see it happen all the time and eBay turns a blind eye. For example, one highly-rated seller has auctions for bubble mailers placed in every conceivable category.

As a seller, it's frustrating to know that a particular item will sell much better in a certain category, but eBay will not allow it. I think wherever the item gets the most bids is the most appropriate category.

A month ago, eBay moved all my computer software games from Software:Games to the Photo & Electronics category. Their reason was that they wanted all the games (like Nintendo) in the same area. Then eBay closed down Software: Games, which previously had over 12,000 items listed.

I just don't see where my item was in the "wrong" category. A cross is religious as well as a piece of sterling jewelry.
I agree I want to put the stuff where it will get the most bids afterall that's why we spend so much time picturing, listing, etc.
I didn't even know ebay had category police. It just irks me that they don't even bother to contact you and allow YOU to change the category yourself. They just stick it in the pc category and you have to deal with it. As I said......That's BS.

Often I have seen Pottery, which I love, listed as "Grueby? Weller? Pewabic? Muncie?"

What seller is doing is playing the Keyword game, and gets the ad to show in ALL of those categories for the price on ONE.....You might just list the cross in Religious, but add the word Sterling in title...

What? Since when is a silver cross not a piece of jewelry????

Sounds to me like a disgruntled competitor lucked out in finding the ear of one of the more bubbleheaded service reps.

Unfortunately, there's little you can do about it in the near-term. For the sake of your future listings, you might want to write service again asking for an explanation of exactly WHY a sterling cross doesn't qualify for placement in the jewelry category.

I emailed ebay last night and asked them to explain WHY the cross was taken out of the jewelry category. Of course it will take them a week to get back to me.
In the meantime I got an email from the person who was high bid at the time. He said he got an email stating the auction was over.I had to explain ebay's musing.
I will post their answer as soon as I get it.

This is a very irritating thing, I would think ebay personnel would have more important things to do. I have seen personalized license plates scattered in all listings. When I was unimformed about these things, I wrote the poster to tell them that somehow their item ended up in the wrong category. I thought I was being helpful, they wrote back that they randomly list items and are very successful. I am not sure this person is still doing this, but no category police were pestering them. I have noticed listing accidentally posted in Lenox that are meant for the categoy above or below that category, I am sure it was an accident when they were choosing a category and they did not realize it went in the wrong place. "one of the more bubbleheaded [eBay] service reps."

Now what category would you list him/her in?

I can rememer the time when you went to "relist" an item eBay would encourage the seller to list in a different "unrelated" category. The said to try something different.

I use to visit the marble category(a popular category) quit often and I would see everything from dishes to electronics listed there.

Why the big change now?

I should think you could list your stuff anyplace you want. After all your paying for it.
