Get a nice jar, decorate it with a really nice bow and put little slips of paper in it that say things like:
-candlelight dinner for two
-body massage
-take dry cleaning to the laundry
-picnic in the park

etc. etc.

I originally said books. Always good. I also suggested a cool item that I have up for auction, then thought better of it.

I bought my hubby the car he wants, a PT Cruiser. Sure hope he likes it. If not, the kids will probably get it...

zkatt, you could be describing my Dad!

I read an article that said more and more people were giving food items as gifts this year because people are getting more difficult to shop for. I thought that was a great idea. Our mall has a kiosk that is all smoked salmon and other salmon and fish products. Since my Dad loves that kind of stuff, I bought a bunch of different things and made up my own gift basket. They had baskets already made, but I like making my own. Do you have a World Market store near you? They have all kinds of unusual and interesting foods, spices, candies, coffees, wines etc. Last year I made a basket for a good friend with some Fiesta coffee mugs and all kinds of coffees, teas and hot chocolates. Baskets could be made up for people who like to cook, chocolate lovers, Tex-Mex, salsa lovers, etc.

Good luck!

I'd opt for a gift of a "service", like certificates for a massage, passes to a full-service car wash place, or perhaps gift certificates for something like video rentals or an e-tailer. These are the sorts of things I get for my Dad year after year (but even then I'm running out of ideas) as he has EVERYTHING. Last year I got him a gift cert. for Half-price books (1/2 price resale book chain around here) since he's an avid reader and loves paperbacks but gets rid of them just as soon as he's finished. .

This year I'm thinking of a gift basket with a couple packs of microwave popcorn, soda, a pair of slippers, maybe one of those things that slips over the arm of the couch to hold the remote, and a few certificates for free video rentals. <shrug> Not the best idea in the world, but like I said, he has EVERYTHING!

I, on the other hand, am a Christmas shopper's dream, liking a huge assortment of thingies and having very little! lol

I feel your pain, though. I never ever know what to get my husband (aside from super expensive stuff we can't afford anyway) and my in-laws... ugh. The mere THOUGHT of having to come up with a gift for them gives me an ulcer. They are very well off, have tons of "stuff"These are the sorts of things I get for my Dad year after year (but even then I'm running out of ideas) as he has EVERYTHING, and my MIL is pretty snooty and brand concious, so we just let the grandkids make stuff for Omie and Opie and they are happy with that.. otherwise I'd have NO IDEA what to buy!

For what it's worth, anyone interested in making gifts should check out this site;

http://www.family.com

from the main page go to the left "shortcuts" bar and click 'gift finder' then choose 'make a gift'. Lots of neat stuff, some of it really useful and cute and not screaming "homemade" either!

I know a couple people like that. I always try to get them something either for play or for the spirit.
If you knew them when they were young you could purchase their favorite toy or game from their youth.
Or you could get them something that makes them feel all warm inside...like get your hands on something they've kept for years and years and have it professionally framed to preserve and display it.

If all else fails, buy a bunch of their favorite foods and put it in a treasure chest-like box.

My coworker did something really special for her hubby. She made a book for him. You know those scrapbooks that are so popular to make right now? Well she make a little book for him out of a pocket sized journal. It had pics, movie ticket stubs, special sayings about love ect....
It was great. And he loved it.
